Wauwatosa School District facing $1 million cut in state aid under Gov. Walker’s budget

Well this is awkward…

Facing a hit of about $900,000 under Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed state budget, Wauwatosa School District officials are planning meetings with lawmakers to push them to restore funding in the final budget.

“I think it’s important that they know the impact of what it will mean long-term,” Superintendent Phil Ertl said. “Long-term, our programs are not going to be sustainable. We can’t keep taking these hits.”

Walker’s proposed budget eliminates $150 in state aid per pupil for the next school year. The funding is restored in the 2016-17 school year, but overall there is a net loss. Revenue limits would be held flat, so schools could not make up the difference in property taxes.

In a radio address, Walker said lowering property taxes was one of his top priorities in his budget.

“I am proud to say that our state budget will continue those reforms, so the property tax bill on a typical home will be even lower during the next two years,” Walker said.

Echoing comments from around the state, Director of Business Services for Wauwatosa schools John Mack said he was surprised to see the extend of the cuts Walker proposed.

“It’s a hard hit,” Mack said. “You almost have a sense of disbelief when you read that. To say ‘we’re going to take away from you again,’ it’s very disheartening to work in this industry when that type of thing keeps happening.”

  1. Too bad, kids. I’ve got mine and I’m pulling up the ladder behind me. Plus you deserve it.

    I’ll pray for you.

  3. ‘he was surprised to see the extend of the cuts Walker proposed.’
He’s been in office 4 years and has shown his true colors pretty much from the day after the first governor’s election. At this point, anyone who is surprised by anything in the budget hasn’t been paying attention.

    1. Sue, it’s not just Walker’s cuts to education,, but the increases to his friends and waste, elsewhere . Beginning with a “selfie , how about the doubling of his personal security? And worse is the giving away millions by Walker’s failed job creation agency, WEDC along with their bad loans, plus grants with no return, and incompetent personnel. Speaking of poor decisions and wasteful turnover,, remember how long one of his donor’s son lasted and wasn’t Walker’s Health Secretary another “here today, gone tomorrow” just like some of his for-profit voucher schools ? Of course, those monetary losses were offset by cuts to the healthcare of seniors, children, and the needy. There’s plenty more; these are just from memory without doing a search; I wonder how much legal cost was incurred for gerrymandering and his fraudulent voter fraud” bill? .
