that has a certain cadence to it that would work while marching up Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, wouldn’t it?? This is my reaction to the New York Times Article: Ivanka Trump Used Personal Email Account for Government Business, Review Finds.
This would probably be a mole hill…at least in my opinion…except for the fact that Candidate Donald Trump made it a mountain on the campaign trail about Hillary Clinton’s private email server…the man who conducted his followers in their chant of “lock her up”. And still does to this day!
So this situation is no less serious and deserves the attention of the House and the Senate and the White House…to essentially the same extent…yes?
Now to be fair here is the comment from one of Ms. Trump’s spokesmen:
“To address misinformation being peddled about Ms. Trump’s personal email, she did not create a private server in her house or office, there was never classified information transmitted, the account was never transferred or housed at Trump Organization, no emails were ever deleted and the emails have been retained in the official account in conformity with records preservation laws and rules,” the spokesman, Peter Mirijanian, said in a statement. “When concerns were raised in the press 14 months ago, Ms. Trump reviewed and verified her email use with White House counsel and explained the issue to congressional leaders.”
Now the statement says that a private server was never set up. It may have been better if it had. A private server would at least be more traceable and examinable and under the control of an individual or group under Ms. Trump or Mr. Kushner’s supervision. A server the FBI could get its hands on easily. Another article that I read on the subject said that the private email was on a Microsoft server…which I assume to mean in the cloud and possibly a shared resource. Not necessarily a more secure platform.
And we are reassured that no classified information was transmitted. Well Ms. Clinton assured us of the same thing but the FBI reported that in fact her server did have some emails that contained classified information. I would expect something similar here…given the casual relationship between private and government activities as practiced by the members of the president’s family.
But this is the most implausible statement from Ms. Trump:
Ms. Trump had told people in the White House that she was unaware of the rules when she was using her personal account.
After listening to her father berate Ms. Clinton’s use of a private email system for the past three years..after the days of Congressional hearings around Ms. Clinton’s emails…after the announcements around the election in 2016 from former FBI Director James Comey about Ms. Clinton’s emails…she was unaware of the rules? No one who received private emails about White House business was aware of the rules? And someone in a new position didn’t have the inclination to ask? “Lock her up!”
All that’s left to say is this quote from a member of Ms. Clinton’s staff:
“Oh Ivanka,” Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman, Nick Merrill, posted on Twitter on Monday evening.
