In an attempt to quiet Republican criticisms around the House impeachment inquiry, it is being reported that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is ready to bring the issue to full House vote.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Monday the House will vote on a resolution formalizing its impeachment inquiry and establish the next steps in the investigation into President Donald Trump.
In a letter to colleagues, Pelosi wrote that Thursday’s vote is not necessary but ultimately aims to “eliminate any doubt as to whether the Trump Administration may withhold documents, prevent witness testimony, disregard duly authorized subpoenas, or continue obstructing the House of Representatives.”
The resolution, Pelosi added, lays out the procedure for public hearings and authorizes “the disclosure of deposition transcripts, outlines procedures to transfer evidence to the Judiciary Committee as it considers potential articles of impeachment and sets forth due process rights for the President and his Counsel.”
The GOP may finally get just what they asked for…transparency in the hearings…and what the get may not please them all that much.
Trump and his allies on Capitol Hill have complained for weeks that the House impeachment inquiry has been nontransparent and fundamentally unfair to the president.
Here’s the thing with the GOP. They know how the process works. They passed the current rules back in 2015 or such and then Speaker of the House John Boehner signed off on them. But they keep throwing up these protests because they know that their followers have no idea how any of this works.
So the GOP and the Trump regime better get their printers warmed up and filled with ink so they can produce all of the documents the House is calling for. And they’ll have to send over all of the people being subpoenaed for hearings because the vote to run the inquiry will certainly pass the House on Thursday.
And once again, my feeling is, if they really think the impeachment will be a boon in the 2020 elections, why are they protesting so strongly? Or would they prefer to bring the impeachment to a head now to rid themselves of Trump with having to stand up to him??
