Reprise: Rep. Gwen Moore Needs To Retire

Since I am on most of the state and local Democratic mailings lists, it should come as no surprise that this past week I got an invite to a ‘birthday party’ fundraiser for US Representative Gwen Moore.

I have addressed this issue before, in November of 2020 in fact, when I suggested that she announce her retirement after President Biden was inaugurated. Obviously that didn’t happen and she ran for re-election in 2022 and won her tenth term in office. I tried to be gracious at the time but now, I really, really think that her time in Washington should end. Other than helping secure federal funds for Milwaukee mass transit, both the county bus system and the fledgling city street car, I can’t think of a major piece of legislation that she has written or even proposed. She isn’t an asset to the City of Milwaukee nor her 4th Congressional district. I don’t see her out and in front of anything in the media or the area. And no I don’t want her to be the activist media star that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D – NY) is. That isn’t Moore’s style nor Milwaukee’s. But I would expect the involvement that we see from Senator Tammy Baldwin (D – WI) for instance or any number of other Wisconsin Democrats at the state and local levels (see list below).

And it is time that the Boomers step aside and let the rest of America assume the roles of American leadership. It isn’t like we don’t have plenty of local talent. A US Representative only needs to be 25 years old. And I am thinking the 4th District would be effectively served by anyone of these people: Former Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, Milwaukee County Chair Marcelia Nicholson, Milwaukee Alderman Jonathan Brostoff, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, State Senator Chris Larson, or Milwaukee Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic (and no that’s not the complete list, just the ones that quickly come to mind without any effort).

Well, I hope Rep. Moore enjoys her birthday. She will be 72 this year. But I also suggest that it is time for her to enjoy her retirement as well…and April 23rd would be a lovely day to announce it! She will have served 20 years in the House, a good round number, and a good point to retire.
