I’ve spent a little time here at Blogging Blue talking about the need to reform Wisconsin’s drunk driving laws, and in keeping with my support for reform of Wisconsin’s drunk driving laws, I’d like to encourage my 3 loyal readers to visit JenniferBukosky.com and sign their petition demanding change in the current Wisconsin Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) laws.
I know some of you may not agree with me that Wisconsin’s OWI laws need to be changed, but I hope those of you who do will sign the petition.
Sorry, Zach, but I cannot do it.
It looks good, but for the checkpoints. That is too invasive and makes it a police state.
capper, thanks for your honesty. I’d argue against OWI checkpoints turning Wisconsin into a police state, but I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that point.
I was actually going to say the exact same thing as capper. I do agree with the other proposals on the petition, but the civil libertarian in me can’t sign my name to something advocating for dragnet checkpoints.
To Capper and JCG and everyone else,
First everyone needs to know that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 20 years ago that sobriety checkpoints are not an invasion of anyone’s privacy. This ruling has been challenged several times and each time the Court has said that as long as these checkpoints are used to lessen drunk driving and appropriate guidelines are used there are no problems (the guidelines are spelled out). 2nd the bill that is presently being formed only allows the police to conduct sobriety checkpoints. There is nothing mandatory. Each community can do as it wishes. My third and last point is that if you truely think OWI laws should be changed, then use the website http://www.jenniferbukosky.com and with your address and a simple mouse click you can send a email to your legislators demanding change. If for some reason you are opposed to that then just go online, phone, or write and contact your individual legislator and tell them exactly what you want. Either way is far better than finding fault with one issue and doing nothing.

Well put, Mr. Jenkins.
I am sorry for your loss, and will heed your words of individual action.
Thanks for your reply, Paul & Judy. I want to make clear I think your cause is noble and I am on your side. I’m aware SCOTUS has ruled checkpoints to be constitutional, but I just disagree with that ruling. I have already, in recent months and years, contacted my reps regarding the need for tougher OWI laws. Thanks for the work you’re doing – hopefully your work can help prevent others’ loses in the future.
