Letter to NRSC in Response to Fund Raising Request

DEAR NRSC

Thank you for your recent fund raising letter.  Unfortunately you won’t be seeing a cent of my money.

I’ve been appalled by the antics of every one of the GOP Senators as they stand fast against the business of the country.

Instead of working together to create the best health care plan possible, your group of 40 has done nothing but been obstructionist.  I for one am looking forward to guaranteed health care insurance and to seeing some of the abuses of the past brought to an end.

Instead of trying to come up with the best way to reinvigorate the economy, a disaster that was created by your group’s willingness to follow George Bush over an ideological cliff, the majority of your 40 senators decided to be obstructionist here too.

Instead of voting for a TSA Director in the middle of a war on terrorism, one of your Senators had the gall to place the nominee on hold due to the potential for unionization of the workforce.

Instead of being ethical and moral leaders as you espouse, we’ve seen Senator’s Vitter, Ensign and Craig bring shame to the party and to the values that you supposedly find so dear.

I could go on and on and on.  While I might have provided funds and voted for Republicans in the past, I see little in your policies or approaches to serving the needs of the American people that merits any support.

  1. Thanks for the laughs, MadCityMan!

“Instead of working together to create the best health care plan possible” — As if the President and Democrat Congress are willing to adopt any Republican ideas? Where GOP members invited in to the room? No.

“Instead of trying to come up with the best way to reinvigorate the economy” — Yes, you can expect ‘obstructionism’ when bloated federal spending is proposed. It’s the only vehicle they have in the minority.

“Instead of voting for a TSA Director in the middle of a war on terrorism” — It took President Obama over EIGHT MONTHS to even nominate anyone, so when he finally got around to it Republicans are just expected to rubberstamp whoever he appoints? Suddenly now you are concerned about a war on terrorism. How convenient.

“Instead of being ethical and moral leaders as you espouse” — Both sides are not blameless when it comes to this, so are you saying the difference is that Democrats do not espouse these things and therefore get a pass?

“While I might have provided funds and voted for Republicans in the past” — Really? When would that have been? What, you were a fan of Newt? Based on your posts here, I find this hard to believe.

  2. You’re a hoot too, Forgot! Obvious from your answer and your screen name is how forgetful you are.

In terms of point number 1 health care and the GOP – You conveniently forget the months of wasted time with Senator Grassley, Olympia Snowe etc working with Baucus on health care. Here’s what Ezra Klein had to say about them at the time “This is who is in the room helping Baucus put together his bill. Olympia Snowe, Mike Enzi, Chuck Grassley, Jeff Bingaman and Kent Conrad.” (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2009/07/the_max_baucus_committee.html). If I’m not mistaken every single one of these is a Repuglican. They were clearly at the table and decided before throwing grandmother to the death panels that their best strategy on health care was to delay things.

In terms of reinvigorating the economy – economists are reaching a consensus that without the stimulus we would have seen a significant contraction last year. Where were the GOP on this? Just say No.

In terms of the TSA leader – given all the positions to nominate, I don’t fault Obama for the eight months in appointing the TSA Director, what I do fault is Senator DeMint’s stupidity in not letting the nominee be voted on.

In terms of morality – The GOP has long had a “do as I say not as I do” holy roller morality. The number of divorces, infidelities is way out there (McCain – 2 wifes, Newt – 3 Wifes, Stanford – Divorced, etc). This philosophy precludes them from get out of jail cards when they do transgress. I personally don’t care about this issue, but if you’re going to get on your high horse and insist on everyone behaving like a prim and proper Victorian, then you have no voice when it comes to your party’s own zipper problems.

In terms of voting for Republicans – I have voted for them, in fact I’m a proud owner of a Ford Dole T-shirt to show my loyalty for this action. Why else do you think they keep sending me solicitations.

Thanks for your humor and forgetfullness!

    1. Sir, I didn’t forget anything but my screen name. 🙂

You mention Olympia Snowe — I would hardly call this reaching out to Republicans. More like trying to pick off a couple of the most liberal Republicans because the Dems needed the votes. And if anything, doesn’t that speak volumes that they were not even able to convince Olympia Snowe that their plan was a good idea?!

In terms of the economy, why not just say no to the stimulus? The Democrats were going to pass it anyway and ignore any input from the likes of Paul Ryan and others who came up with some alternative ideas. I guess that’s the luxury of being in the minority, you can just say No. Were Democrats any different when the tables were turned? For example, when Bush proposed Social Security reform, did they come up with any other ideas or just blast his plan? Let’s look at both sides for once, Man.

TSA leader: you can’t play it both ways. Either it is extremely critical that this position be filled, or it’s not. You can’t give a pass to Obama and then fault DeMint for questioning the selection. Are they just supposed to approve anyone put before them? Again, if it’s an important position, it should have been nominated long before eight months had passed. It didn’t take Obama eight months to come up with ways to spend trillions of dollars. It’s really convenient that it’s important NOW after something almost happens. Sorry, you don’t have a leg to stand on here.

In terms of morality — so basically you are saying it is better to have no standards at all because that is easier to live up to. I think we should hold high standards and realize not everyone can live up to them. And I’m not exactly what you are referring to here — are you saying we shouldn’t put a priority on families because McCain and Newt got divorced? I don’t think they ever preached against divorced or proposed to outlaw it. You can say divorce is a bad thing and negative on the family unit, even if you have had one.

I think the real problem is that you are still getting GOP solicitations when your last support goes way back to Ford/Dole, not exactly a ticket to hang your hat on, but at least you had the foresight to recognize the shortcomings of Jimmy Carter!
