Droning on

As usual, Stuart Carlson of Carlsontoons.com sums it up best:

The use of drones to kill suspected terrorist began under former President George W. Bush, but that program has actually widened under President Obama to allow the targeting of American citizens. As noted David Kravets writing for Wired, drone strikes by the Pentagon and the CIA have sparked backlashes from foreign governments and populations, as the strikes often kill civilians, including women and children.

You may remember President Obama’s administration has also justified assassinating American citizens without due process if those citizens meet the following criteria:

  • The target must be a top al-Qaeda operative or a member of affiliate forces, and he must actively be planning to kill Americans;
  • The U.S. government must conclude after a thorough and careful review that the target poses an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States;
  • Capture of the target is not practical;
  • The killing of the target must be conducted in a manner consistent with the relevant law of war principles.

In determining it can assassinate U.S. citizens without due process, the Obama administration has proven that it will ignore the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution when it deems such action necessary, making it hardly an improvement over the Constitutionally-challenged administration of former President George W. Bush.
