Hours after encouraging his thuggish supporters to “storm the Capitol” President Donald Trump’s supporters did just that – they started rioting and engaging in criminal behavior. Hours after his supporters began their criminal behavior President Trump issued a very brief statement in which he praised the criminals, telling them he “loved them” and they were “very special.” (emphasis added)
As Capitol police finally began clearing the building late in the afternoon, Trump issued a one-minute videotaped statement directed at the rioters that began by expressing sympathy for their “pain” and “hurt” before launching into a litany of his own grievances about “an election that was stolen from us.”“But you have to go home now,” Trump said. “We have to have peace.”
“We love you. You’re very special,” he added. “I know how you feel.”
Donald Trump incited the violence we’ve all witnessed on Capitol Hill today, and he needs to be held accountable for his behavior. What’s more, any Congressional Republicans who willingly fed into President Trump’s delusions of an election stolen should face sanctions for their actions, because they’ve been complicit in fueling the fire that led to today’s criminal and terroristic behavior on the part of Trump supporters.
