The candidates’ cash flow

On Sunday I outlined the likeliest possible contenders to be the next Democratic gubernatorial candidate, and I while each candidate has strengths and weaknesses, virtually all the likeliest Democratic gubernatorial candidates suffer from a serious lack of cash, with the exception of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

  • At the end of the most recent reporting period, Lt. Gov. Barb Lawton had $50,904 cash on hand.
  • Rep. Ron Kind had $955,152 cash on hand, but under state law he can only use $43,128 of that if he chose to run for governor.
  • Mayor Barrett is flush with cash, with $840,257 in his campaign account, giving him a big cash advantage should be choose to run for governor.
  • State Sen. Jon Erpenbach has more than $21,000 cash on hand.
  • And finally, Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk only has about $15,000 in the bank.

While money alone can’t win an election, the healthy war chest Tom Barrett has at his disposal would certainly allow him start a potential gubernatorial campaign with a very distinct advantage over his Democratic rivals, who’d be forced to spend more time raising money than Barrett.

  1. Zach, you are pulling your stuff from another print source without attribution. That surprises me. I hope you’ll reconsider and start linking your source.
