Here’s my assessment of the debate between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain:
John McCain came across as an angry, patronizing, old man who seemed to relish and denigrating a insulting a younger, more respectful man. In a debate that was supposed to play to Sen. McCain’s strengths, I see this debate as essentially being a toss-up. If it were a football game, the score would have been 21-20 in favor of John McCain, but considering how he’s supposed to be eminently more qualified and knowledgeable on issue relating to foreign policy and national defense, this should have been a blowout for Sen. McCain, but it wasn’t.
In fact, while John McCain may have “won” the debate on the issues – at least in the eyes of the pundits – I think Barack Obama won serious points for appearing to be the more poised, graceful, and calm of the two candidates, and he definitely appeared more presidential in comparison to Sen. McCain. Sen. McCain used the terms “doesn’t understand” repeatedly when referring to Barack Obama, but the facts aside, McCain came across as ungraceful and arrogant. Additionally, Barack Obama really seemed to present himself as the candidate of change and forward thinking, while John McCain repeatedly referenced the past – even throwing in an Alexander the Great reference for good measure.
This may have been a victory for Sen. John McCain, but it was a Pyrrhic victory at best.
Jim Lehrer needs a slap upside the head for the way he moderated it.
I think Obama was too respectful in response to McCains lies about voting records. And, he is too long winded.
On the other hand, McCain seems like he’s having *senior moments* more and more and was like an inch away from referring to Obama as boy or son.
McCain never won Miss Congeniality (he mentioned twice)…no worries his partner has one she can loan him. Now, what’s the odds that if Obama would have used that expression the press would have been all over that all night long?
Yeah, my one criticism of Obama is that he was a little too respectful, and agreed too much with McCain.
Zach,
It sounds to me like Obama would make a fine King. No offense, but I just had to chuckle after reading your entry. You are essentially saying McCain won…but he was a McGruff to Obama’s elegance. So what? Personally. I thought the whole debate lacked substance from both candidates. A big PU from me.
Janet, what I was saying – and maybe I needed to do a better job – is that Obama seemed more presidential than McCain.
well it looks like McCain is treating Obama as kid. And even Obama was too respectful to McCain. He aggreed a lot with McCain. McCain on the other hand looked aggressive and was trying to dominate Obama. But to be honest I was more impressed with Obama post debate.
