”…if by a liberal they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people – their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, their civil liberties..if that is what they mean by a “liberal” then I am proud to be a liberal.”

They key word is “IF” — and that’s not what we mean by “liberals.” Creating a society dependent on the federal government does not equate to caring about people. Truly caring about people would mean creating an environment where they can succeed or fail on their own — not just giving it away. Because as we have seen time and time again, government interference more often than not screws things up. As another great president said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.'”
Also, JFK was a liberal who still believed in tax cuts, something the modern day liberal has long since abandoned, so I don’t know if his definition can apply to the modern day monstrosity of liberalism.
See that argument about evil taxing liberals would work, if Governor Doyle and his administration under Democratic and liberal leaning got the taxes finally at it’s lowest since 1961.
Or rather, if that didn’t happen above.
