Climate Change Expectations: a few random things to talk about

Overpopulation

…In 1900, there were just 1.65 billion of us; now, there are 7.2 billion. That’s more than two doublings, and the next billion-human increase is expected to occur over the short space of just 12 years.

Killer Hornets

The population of Asian giant hornets (vespa mandarinia), as they’re known, has surged largely because of climate change, says the Shaanxi Provincial Forestry Department. The average winter temperature in Ankang rose 1.10 ℃ in the span of a few years alone, allowing more hornets to survive the winter. And it’s not just China; rising temperatures are behind the spread of another deadly Chinese hornets species, vespa velutina, in South Korea and Europe.

Hyperactive Snakes

“A warmer climate may be causing snakes to become more active and seek more baby birds for food,” said Faaborg, professor of biological sciences in MU’s College of Arts and Science. “Although our study used 20 years of data from Missouri, similar threats to bird populations may occur around the world. Increased snake predation on birds is an example of an indirect consequence that forecasts of the effects of climate change often do not take into account.”

Conflict Zones

New research has found compelling evidence linking even small changes in climate to increases in human conflict across the world, with troubling new implications for a potentially warming planet.

In the study, published in Science this month, the researchers wrote that they pulled from archaeology, criminology, economics, geography, history, political science, and psychology to draw their conclusion: even minor changes in climate are linked to increases in violence and warfare in human populations.
