WI 5th CD Race? Vukmir, Farrow, Kooyenga are OUT

Considering how early this is and just how recently Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner announced that he wasn’t running for re-election, I am surprised that these Republican ‘heavy weights’ are dropping out of a race in one of Wisconsin’s safest red districts. But there it is:

Former state Sen. Leah Vukmir, who made an unsuccessful run against U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin last year, announced Thursday she would not seek Sensenbrenner’s seat.

“After prayerful consideration and many heartfelt discussions with my family, I have decided not to run for the 5th Congressional District,” Vukmir wrote on Twitter.

Her announcement came days after Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow and state Sen. Dale Kooyenga of Brookfield said they were not getting in the race.

This is pretty surprising…particularly Vukmir and Kooyenga. Who are they clearing the field for? Or are they that afraid of Senator Scott Fitzgerald?

Half a dozen GOP sources said Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald is all but certain of getting into the race to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner next year.

He certainly has clout within the party but I am not sure he’s the most appealing to the GOP rank and file. But I guess, we’ll see.
