This was broadcast on NPR this morning. Apparently Senator Richard Burr knew how virulent the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is and how destructive it would be to the American public and economy.

Three weeks ago, Senator Burr told these business men (the Tar Heel Circle – whose members pay $500 to $10,000 to join) that this virus was the most dangerous we had seen since the Spanish Flu in 1918. He anticipated having to close schools. He recommended that they restrict business travels for their employees. And how the US would probably need to mobilize the military to help in fighting the pandemic.
“There’s one thing that I can tell you about this: It is much more aggressive in its transmission than anything that we have seen in recent history,” he said, according to a secret recording of the remarks obtained by NPR. “It is probably more akin to the 1918 pandemic.”
Now this meeting was held the same day that the president was saying this in a public forum:
“It’s going to disappear. One day, It’s like a miracle. It will disappear,” the president said then…
Three weeks ago the Senator knew what was coming. And he did nothing to warn the general public. We lost another three weeks to prepare for the crisis we are facing. Senator Burr is a smart and accomplished man. He has significant experience planning for and anticipating public health issues. And he was aware of the risks this nation is facing. And he essentially did nothing.
Burr has a unique perspective on the government’s response to a pandemic, and not just because of his role as Intelligence Committee chairman. He helped to write the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA), which forms the framework for the federal response.
Are all of the Republicans in Washington so afraid of the demagogue in the White House that they are willing to commit criminal acts and let Americans die??
No, Senator Burr couldn’t prevent the eventual spread of COVID-19. But we could have slowed the transmission rate. He could have helped the nation be better prepared. He could have made us realize what a formidable task we faced. He could have helped reinforce what a serious disease COVID-19 is in the face of the lies coming from the White House. And we could have had a three week head start.
My guess is he had some of his knowledge as the Chair of the Senate Intelligence committee. Who else was briefed? Apparently not the ranking Democrat or we should have heard from them. The rest of the Republican committee membership? Why haven’t they informed the public? Or did Senator Burr keep this all to himself.
And if Senator Burr knew…the White House knew. The White House knew! Three weeks ago…the White House knew and did nothing except say: “It’s going to disappear.”
They should all be brought up on criminal charges the minute the nation has a moment to catch its breath.
