They should have been meeting to finally hammer out the next COVID-19 financial stimulus package. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have been working on this for months. They both should pretty much know where each party stands and be ready to meet somewhere in between.
Meanwhile Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needs to enter the fray so that the House doesn’t once again pass a bill that he has no intention of bringing to the floor of the Senate. He has spent the entire fall standing in the weeds blaming the Democrats for a lack of willingness to bargain…when they have been in actual talks and he’s been in snide mode.
But there needs to be a bill. The stimulus money from earlier this year has pretty much run through the economy and things are starting to slide again. Particularly as the coronavirus continues to pick up steam and additional closures, lockdowns, and stay at home orders start to have a negative impact on the general economy.
These three need to put together a comprehensive package that they all agree on and pass with a veto proof majority…just in case the president gets in a snit and refuses to sign it…and get it out this week and approved before Thanksgiving…the entire nation needs something to celebrate and breath a collective sigh of relief going into the year end.
