On McCain and the Bailout

Just a few thoughts on Sen. John McCain and the government bailout of Wall Street.

• Let’s start with news that McCain campaign manager Rick Davis was being paid $15,000 a month by Freddie Mac until last month through the firm owned by Davis. It’s being said Davis & Manafort, the firm owned by Rick Davis, had been kept on the payroll of Freddie Mac because of Rick Davis’s close ties to Sen. McCain, who by 2006 was widely expected to run again for the White House.
• Oh, and here’s another interesting tidbit. Just this week, Senator McCain called for end to golden parachutes while conveniently neglecting to mention one of his campaign’s top advisors – at least until recently – was herself the beneficiary of a golden parachute. Carly Fiorina was dismissed as
  the CEO of Hewlett Packard in 2005 after a merger with Compaq floundered, stock prices plunged 50 percent, and 20,000 people were laid off. What was Fiorina’s punishment for such a poor job as CEO? A $21.4 million severance package.

  When confronted about the hypocrisy of his opposition to golden parachutes while he had Carly Fiorina as a campaign advisor, Sen. McCain told Meredith Viera “I don’t know the details of her compensation package.”

• One final point…am I the only one who sees the hypocrisy in this ad:

  After all, it’s kind hard to talk about “breaking the iron triangle of big money, special interest lobbyists, and the legislation they buy” when you have 164 lobbyists working on your presidential campaign.
