No health care mandate for South Milwaukee

Fresh off the heels of voters in Milwaukee overwhelmingly approving a referendum that requires all private employers in the city to provide paid sick days to all employees, members of the South Milwaukee Common Council are prepared to
suspend their rules tonight so they can quickly adopt an ordinance prohibiting the city itself from mandating private businesses provide certain wages or benefits to employees. Asked to comment, Alderman Mike McCarthy commented, “Why should the city dictate to private companies?”

Score one for South Milwaukee’s businesses, at the expense of all those workers in South Milwaukee who don’t have – and shouldn’t expect – health insurance through their employers.
