America Needs Another 9/11?

According to Stu Bykofsky, that’s exactly what America needs.

Remember the community of outrage and national resolve? America had not been so united since the first Day of Infamy – 12/7/41.

We knew who the enemy was then.

We knew who the enemy was shortly after 9/11.

Because we have mislaid 9/11, we have endless sideshow squabbles about whether the surge is working, if we are “safer” now, whether the FBI should listen in on foreign phone calls, whether cops should detain odd-acting “flying imams,” whether those plotting alleged attacks on Fort Dix or Kennedy airport are serious threats or amateur bumblers. We bicker over the trees while the forest is ablaze.

America’s fabric is pulling apart like a cheap sweater.

What would sew us back together?

Another 9/11 attack.

The Golden Gate Bridge. Mount Rushmore. Chicago’s Wrigley Field. The Philadelphia subway system. The U.S. is a target-rich environment for al Qaeda.

Is there any doubt they are planning to hit us again?

If it is to be, then let it be. It will take another attack on the homeland to quell the chattering of chipmunks and to restore America’s righteous rage and singular purpose to prevail.

I first saw this story posted by Jay Bullock over at folkbum’s rambles and rants, and he does a great job of debunking most of what Bykofsky says, but I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts. I just cannot fathom how anyone – regardless of political affiliation – could support more innocent American lives being taken simply for the sake of “national unity.” The very idea that innocent Americans need to die to bring about a renewed sense of national unity has to be the most asinine thing I’ve ever heard. What’s most disturbing to me is the fact that Stu Bykofsky isn’t alone in thinking we need another 9/11, because already wingnuts from across the Cheddarsphere are lining up to agree with his sentiments.

Now obviously those folks who agree that innocent Americans need to die so we can have a little more national unity are certainly entitled to their respective opinions, but I think those folks are just indicative of the bloodlust that seems to be so common among some in the conservative movement. I can’t help but wonder if those same folks who are advocating for the deaths of more innocent Americans would be willing to give their own lives in hopes of some “national unity,” or are they simply content to call for the deaths of others?

In my opinion, the problem as relates to national unity doesn’t fall to the American people; it’s our leadership that’s gotten us to this point of disunity. After 9/11, our leaders had an opportunity to bring this nation together in our fight against terrorism, but instead that opportunity was squandered simply so neo-conservatives could finally have their war in Iraq.
