Democrats who control the state Assembly voted Thursday to cap participation in Milwaukee’s parental choice program at 19,500 students for the next two years – about the same number of students who now attend private schools at state expense.
Let me make it clear I’m no fan of Milwaukee’s school choice program. If it disappeared, I certainly wouldn’t shed a tear, but the proposal by Assembly Dems to cut the number of choice seats in Milwaukee is politically stupid. I know a compromise was later reached setting the cap for school choice at 21,500, but Assembly Dems should have kept their hands entirely off the issue.
