As you may have heard, contract negotiations between the MATC administration and the part-time teachers’ union have recently broken down. We are in the midst of a public relations blitz in an attempt to get the word out regarding the lack of proper compensation for part-time faculty.
The heart of our argument is the disparity between the salaries of the full-time faculty and ourselves. Let me empasize that we have no issue with the salary of full-timers, only the gap that has been created by the administration. They are effectively balancing their budget by keeping part-time wages low. We have even offered to request no wage increases until 2012 in order to get through this rough economy, but the administration is yet to budge.
By my estimation, part-time teachers do the same work as full-time teachers, just on a smaller scale, so why shouldn’t they be paid at a level commensurate with what full-time teachers are making? It’s good to see the part time teaching staff at MATC standing up for themselves, and I hope they’re able to get some resolution to their situation.
You can read more for yourself about this situation at the MATC part-time faculty blog.
