RNC health insurance plan covers abortions…

…and it has for 18 years:

The Republican National Committee’s health insurance plan covers elective abortion – a procedure the party’s own platform calls “a fundamental assault on innocent human life.”

Federal Election Commission Records show the RNC purchases its insurance from Cigna. Two sales agents for the company said that the RNC’s policy covers elective abortion.

Informed of the coverage, RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho told POLITICO that the policy pre-dates the tenure of current RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

“The current policy has been in effect since 1991, and we are taking steps to address the issue,” Gitcho said.

What I’m wondering is how it took 18 years for someone to notice this “minor detail” in the GOP’s health insurance coverage.

H/T to The Chief.

  1. I heard Steele has canceled the abortion coverage in the RNC insurance. I am pro-life but I think canceling the abortion coverage is wrong. There are some women who are faced with the very difficult decision of ending their pregnancies to save their own lives…and to not have this coverage would cause them even more pain. Once again…a stupid man putting politics first…after all…appearances in politics is always much more important than doing what’s right.

    1. Personally, I’d be curious to know how many women working for the RNC have availed themselves of the abortion coverage. I’m willing to bet there’s at least a few.
