Bohrod campaign issues apology

On Friday I noted Democratic State Treasurer candidate Dan Bohrod has come under scrutiny for a press release he emailed to a number of state legislators at their state-provided email addresses. The press release was also lacking the “Authorized and paid for by….” disclaimer, and attorney Michael Maistelman filed a complaint with the state Government Accountability Board on behalf of incumbent State Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass. In response to the complaint, Bohrod issued a statement:

BOHROD CAMPAIGN: I APOLOGIZE

MADISON–State Treasurer candidate Dan Bohrod today released the following statement:

“Two days ago I issued a press release that was inadvertently distributed to a number of people to whom it should not have been, including several elected officials. This was my mistake, and I must assume full responsibility and consequences. I have made mistakes during the course of this campaign, but this was the most egregious. I deeply regret it, and I apologize to Treasurer Sass, to those who should not have received the information, and to the voters of Wisconsin.”

Authorized and paid for by Bohrod for State Treasurer, Dan Bohrod, Treasurer

What Bohrod did certainly seems like an honest mistake, but I’m glad to see him own up to what he did and take responsibility, and hopefully the GAB’s sanction won’t be too severe.

  1. Did you really use the words “GAB’s sanction” and “severe” in the same sentence? I almost snorted coffee out my nose. The GAB is just as toothless and spineless as the two buck-passing agencies it replaced.

  2. It’s not the first email he sent to legislators. We got one from him a few weeks ago. I’m sure that will be included in this complaint.
This story won’t end because Bohrod doesn’t know what he’s doing. Time to throw support behind a democrat who knows what she is doing and has done a lot of good in that office.

Then there’s that about EdVest…which she has helped grow. Is that a good catch by me?

I would also point to the fact that in the three years she’s been in office she’s given back 26 million, 27 million and 28 million DOLLARS to residents in unclaimed property. quadruple what was given back in any years prior by Republican Jack Voight.

I will also point out that she is the Vice President of those organizations where she went to the conferences, and gave presentations at them…the state taxpayers pay for ALL politicians to go to events like this. She is also well regarded by those organizations as a treasurer who does something in office.
As for the backlog…she had Deputy Treasurer placed there by Governor Doyle who was hiring women he could sleep with. They started leaving when shit hit the fan that they might get fired! Hence the backlog.
There are 14 people that work in that office.
    14!!!!!
4 of them do unclaimed property.
I know several of the people that work there…they worked there before Sass as well and say the past 3 years with her have been a pleasure. Why? Because she actually comes to work, does claims, cares about the office.
I suggest us democrats worry about the Republican who may win just because he has an (R) next to his name.
Bohrod shouldn’t even be in this race challenging a Democrat who is actually working for the people.

What? Must be missing something in my reading comprehension, because looks to me like the investments – managed by portfolio managers at investment firms (Wells Fargo, Vanguard, Baird, etc) all together had decent 1 year returns. Of course considering the market as a whole has crawled back a bit from a horrific couple of years, it’s not exactly earth shattering.

EdVest’s one-year performance was 25th out of 52 such programs. Its three-year performance was 13th out of 43 and over five years, it was 14th out of 32.

Woo-hoo, middle of the pack. Is this what your tooting the horn of our Treasurer over? And even if that were impressive, exactly what role did she have in it?

  4. she had Deputy Treasurer placed there by Governor Doyle who was hiring women he could sleep with.

    Tell us more…

Consider those two links above; isn’t it possible that she’d cause an issues electorally for the Democrats?

Of course, it doesn’t bode well for the Bohrod campaign from an organization perspective…

  5. Easy – She wasn’t hiring.
DO you people even work in state government?
You do realize that the appointed deputies are the one’s, like office managers, that bring the people in.
I do love how “political junkies” don’t know how state government actually works and come onto sites like this and spew some “knowledge”.

What role did she have in EdVest? Do some research about Higher Education Day and get back to me. And, maybe before Bohrod says she wasn’t talking to legislators about the tax credit, he should go and ask them who was the person whop brought the idea to the legislators and helped get it passed?
That’s my biggest beef, really. He put out a “news release” to state legislators claiming she didn’t do something that she actually started!

And yes, I will toot the horn of this state treasurer seeing as Bohrod won’t stand a chance, should he win the primary, against the Republican who used to work for Jack Voight when he was Treasurer…think about it.

But we are arguing over a state office that is about name recognition.
At the State Capitol, she is well regarded. Outside of political in-circles, voters remember her name because Sass gave them their money back as she traveled the state every year promoting the office. Bohrod is a no-name.
He wins the primary, you can all just hand the seat to to the Republican, Feldt.
Just remember…any politician this year with a (D) next to their name is in the crosshairs.
Take a look at Barrett…his name is not as widespread as Walkers…and Walker has a substantial poll lead because people don’t really know who he is, they just recognize a name.

    1. What role did she have in EdVest? Do some research about Higher Education Day and get back to me.

Um – you said she helped grow EdVest, and linked to an article that talked exclusively about the financial performance and resulting asset growth. Not a single mention of an increase in participants or anything she had any impact on. If you want to make a claim that she did something to improve the program, you provide numbers/links.

    2. Legis Aide, for someone who works in state government, you’ve shown a stunning lack of insight into the political landscape here in Wisconsin. You wrote the office is all about name recognition, as if to argue that Dawn Marie Sass is well known in Wisconsin, but I’m willing to bet my house that 9 out of 10 voters in Wisconsin don’t even know who she is.

    3. From what you’re saying, Dawn Marie Sass clearly isn’t a believer in the notion that the buck stops with her.

    4. DO you people even work in state government?

That’s a really odd question. Are you saying only state government employees can voice an opinion on the elected state Treasurer?
And considering only a very small minority of the people in this state work in state government, you can generally assume most don’t.

      1. He was implying that unless we work in state government, we’re ignorant rubes when it comes to political stuff.

  6. I should also add that those articles, posted in August by a reporter who got bad information from a disgruntled former staffer won’t be remembered by the general public. You also don’t mention to clarifications Marley had to print 2 days later for the errors in his story.
Most voters have the memory of a flea.

    1. And you have the courtesy of a blood-sucking tick, and you speak with the bloviation of an insider in a desperate campaign who’s afraid of what’s coming down the path but can’t do anything to stop it other than whittle away on blogs. Come out from behind your anonymous screen name. We deserve better.

  7. LOL…not part of the campaign. My boss’s job is secure under the dome…as is mine.
It makes no difference to me if she wins or loses…unless you want a Republican back in there.
I just think no names challenging incumbents in their own parties in off year elections are desperate to be politicians rather than leaders.
Bohrod tried to do this to Pocan a few years ago as well.
Come out of your closet, Jason….you deserve more.

  8. Hi:

It would be good to have the facts right. I know Dan pretty well. He ran for Madison School Board in 1995, and ran for the Assembly in 1998 after Doris Hanson stepped down. It was an open seat which Mark Miller won. (Have you talked with Miller and Pocan by the way?) Dan has never run against a Democratic incumbent before. He’s got 25 years of experience in government. He’ll make an excellent State Treasurer, and stands a much better chance of taking on the tea baggers in November.

Also, this from the Capital Times: http://host.madison.com/ct/news/opinion/editorial/article_7413beaa-2310-11df-8253-001cc4c002e0.html

    1. Would that be the same Mark Miller whose daughter was hired by Jim Doyle to be Chief Legal Council even though she didn’t have a license to practice law in WI? 🙂
