Those classy tea party people!

Preceding President Obama’s speech to a gathering of House Democrats on Saturday, thousands of protesters – presumably of the “Tea Party” variety – descended on the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The protest quickly turned into abusive heckling as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to racial and sexual epithets, along with some mild physical abuse:

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a ‘ni–er.’ And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a “faggot,” as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president’s speech, shrugged off the incident.

But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

“It was absolutely shocking to me,” Clyburn said, in response to a question from the Huffington Post. “Last Monday, this past Monday, I stayed home to meet on the campus of Claflin University where fifty years ago as of last Monday… I led the first demonstrations in South Carolina, the sit ins… And quite frankly I heard some things today I have not heard since that day. I heard people saying things that I have not heard since March 15, 1960 when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus.”

Yeah, those Tea Party folks….they really are a classy bunch!

  1. Not surprising. Not surprising at all. I’m just surprised there aren’t any reports of these upstanding “christian” men (no doubt) shouting “bitch” or “whore” or “blow me”…etc…at the women.

    1. Yeah, that’s what I don’t get. These folks wear their religion on their sleeves, yet they’re not shy about hurling insults and epithets when the mood strikes them.

      1. Yeah…I don’t get it either…which is why I can’t stop pointing it out. I really have issues with religious hypocrites…along with many other things… 🙂

        1. You think everyone who is religious is by definition a hypocrite.

Whoever said all of the people who are involved in the tea party are christians? You just assume that with your stereotypes.

By the way, is there video of this incident or are we relying on the honest word of these Congressmen? Certainly if it did happen, racial epithets are reprehensible. Now think back Inauguration Day of 2001 and 2005. There wasn’t very much respect for President Bush either. Plenty of people were giving the finger and shouting evil things at him.

I’m not going to defend it in any circumstance. You can make your point, even protest, peacefully and respectfully without going into personal attacks.

Forgot…you don’t know what I think so please stop saying you do.

            1. Didn’t mean to put words in your mouth, but a lot of your comments on this blog regarding that topic involves hypocrites. There’s a mentality out there that anyone who holds high standards and then falls short is a hypocrite, as if it were better to have no standard and getting a free pass for doing anything.

  2. I absolutely do not condone spewing of racial comments or physical action under any circumstance. You must have some kind of a memory loss issues, because the left movement has proven over many years to be the most violent and abusive vocal protesters in the US. #1 The Tea Party has NEVER been violent. #2 In this age of technology, when every single person at the protest had a camera or was a part of the media, how on earth can it be that not ONE person recorded the alledged chanting of racial comments. Our government officials, who we all have so much trust in (6% approval rating), said racial comments were spewed 15 times! The Tea Party is hard working, TRUE Americans that beleive in Capatilism and not Socialism. These are people like me that never ever cared about politics. But now I do. You made me care, because you pushed me farther than I could have ever imagined. We beleive in giving to charities from the heart (and we do), not giving up our paycheck because the government says we have to. If I remember correctly, our wonderous (F-ing) Vice President gave something much less than 1% of his income to charity. There’s a role model for you! I love my country and this is my HOMELAND. I’m German and Irish, and I am proud of my heritage. But NEVER in my life have I considered that either of those countries were my homeland. I am an AMERICAN – period. It offends me that the wife of my president would say that Kenya was his homeland.

    1. Lori, are you asserting there haven’t been any instances of racism at “Tea Party” events? I’m left to believe that’s what you’re saying, based on your comments, and I could certainly refute that.

  3. wJust as there are Democratic Left Wing Freeks, there are also right wing freeks. The Tea Party has NEVER been racist, they want freedon for all. We want to uphold the Contstitution. Unlike some democrates who don’t think0 it matters. How do you expaain that the Tea Party is made up of all parites. Dems, Inds and Reps? I love my country and I care. I have never been so worried for my children in my whole life!

  5. You expect 100% of all consertavtives to fit your morld. We don’t. Just like all dems don’t fit the mold.

    1. no…I expect all conservatives and liberals, democrats and republicans, all ethnic and gender identies to use respect when speaking with and to each other. If that is fitting a mold…well then….

  6. Laurie G. Do you truely beleive that what out govt says is true.
When have they ever told you the truth?

  7. Lori C –

I rely on educating myself about issues. That means yes the government sometimes (not always) may not do things that I would like it to do. But that also means that media (conservative and liberal) does not always tell me the full story. I form my own opinions that best reflect the way I would like my government to interact with its citizens.

Just as some background about me….I have worked in all levels of government and have been staff in at least 18 political campaigns ranging from local level to Congressional. I worked for a Member of Congress and yes I believe in the US Constitution. My experience is a culmination of over 20 yrs in working to preserve the Constitution.

I live in a world where I do not expect anyone to purposely withhold the truth, but I am also not so naive to not understand the world/issues around me and take the information spoon-feed to me. Fear & paranoia does not fit into my view of the world. If I don’t like the way my government is doing something I work peacefully & respectfully to change it. I do not shout or march or spit….I work within the system to educate myself and my elected representatives.

Have yourself a pleasant evening and try to relax.
