Pedro Colón goes too far

The effort to remove Rep. Jeff Wood took a nasty turn last week, with Wood trying to compel a vote on his possible discipline while Republican Rep. Steve Nass was absent preparing for the funeral of his recently deceased mother. In a statement on the effort to proceed while he was gone, Rep. Nass said, “In my 20 years in the state Assembly, I have witnessed some pretty lousy tactics by both parties. However, the cowardly and despicable conduct overnight by Rep. Wood and some Democrats is an all-time new low.” However, things got really nasty when Democratic Rep. Pedro Colón of Milwaukee said Nass could have shown up for the 4 a.m. vote Friday, which was about seven hours before the funeral for Rep. Nass’ mother, with Colón noting, “If he wants to prosecute, he can show up.” In his statement, Nass said, “Rep. Colón’s statement is unforgivable and lacks any elements of human decency,” and later on Friday Rep. Colón issued an apology, saying he had not meant any criticism of Nass and offering his “sincerest and deepest regrets” on the loss of Rep. Nass’ mother.

While I’m not going to go as far as some far-right reactionaries in calling Rep. Colón “human debris,” I do think what Rep. Colón said showed a lack of compassion and decency, and it’s disgusting to think he’d politicize the death of another lawmaker’s mother.
