Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks, who had been filling in on MSNBC’s 6 p.m. eastern weekday slot, won’t be continuing at MSNBC, having decided to leave after being asked to change his tone by the MSNBC President Phil Griffin.
Here’s Uygur explaining in his own words why he left MSNBC:
According to Adweek, the 6 p.m. weekday slot that had been occupied by Uygur will be filled by Al Sharpton, who has been filling in at the 6 p.m. slot for the past two weeks. While I’m not a huge fan of Al Sharpton, his ratings have been solid since taking over the 6 p.m. slot.
As for Uygur, while he may be out at MSNBC, I certainly could see him as a good fit for Current TV. While Keith Olbermann’s “Countdown” is anchoring the 8 p.m. eastern slot weekdays at Current, there’s a lot of time slots that could be filled with some original programming, and perhaps Uygur would be a great fit following Keith Olbermann.
As a fellow former Republican, I’ve always identified with and liked Cenk.
He hits the nail on the head about the problems with the mainstream media and their reliance on access, and how that erodes their credibility.
I never knew that you were a former Republican. What caused the shift?
Yeah, family heredity. Then you grow up and learn to think for yourself.
Among many other things though, the tipping point probably being getting into heavy volunteering plus reflecting on the hard knock life we personally had growing up; realizing that while the Republican mantra is to “pull yourself up by the bootstraps”, in reality it’s a shield for pure selfishness and not only do they stand vehemently opposed to anything that has the whiff of giving people the tools to do that, but frequently pin you down by the neck with their own bootstraps to make sure it won’t happen.
In short, because just as all self-made success stories are in their own way, my success wouldn’t have been possible without a helping hand from society.
Plus, have you seen those jokers? They’re f-ing off the rails insane! 😉
Damnit, now I’m having flashbacks of voting for Paul Ryan and GWB. Cold sweats will ensue.
You voted for GWB?
Yikes.
Guess I’ll have to find a different channel to watch at 6pm. I honestly can NOT stand Al Sharpton. Grates on my nerves. Hopefully Cenk will find a way to continue his online video blog and perhaps find another venue for his show.
