You know you’ve heard it, the cries from the TeaOP to the Wall Street occupiers; “Get a job, hippie!” Funny thing is, some of them have jobs, what they don’t have is a good salary. And they’re not likely to find one in this economy. But that’s ok, because all the right wants to do is blame the victims anyway.
As Justin Lahart over at the Wall Street Journal writes:
Few people have gone unscathed by the bad economy, but the way it has damaged the prospects of America’s young college graduates may be one of its most lasting legacies. The high unemployment they are now experiencing will leave many of them a step behind throughout their careers. Research by Yale School of Management economist Lisa Kahn found that workers who graduated from college during the deep recession in the early 1980s were still worse off than workers who graduated in better times in 2006.
When young college graduates do land a job, it often won’t pay well. According to the Census Bureau, the median annual earnings of a worker 25 to 34 years old with a bachelor’s degree (but no graduate degree) was $40,875 last year. That compares with $45,200 in 2000, adjusting for inflation.
For the record, the unemployment rate for teens is a whopping 24.6% (U-4) and for African Americans it’s a staggering 16% (U-4).
Even politics has gone retro…
Yes, the current crop of reactionary TeaOP suckers obviously got hate-lessons from their parents who shouted the same things at the Vietnam War protesters in the 60s and early 70s. Hate, like wealth, is inherited.
I was on the receiving end of those barbs in the 60s and 70s…even though I actually did have jobs the entire time! LOL!
Reply to “Get a job hippie.”:
I got a job man. In fact, I’ve got THREE jobs. And that’s just to get by. So suck it.
(Does the guy who yelled that out even know what a hippie is? Pro’lly not.)
