…and we’re left with the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.
Though I’m loathe to root for either team, I can’t stand the New York Giants, so I’ll be pulling for New England to pull out a win.
Who will you be rooting for today?

I’ll be watching The Puppy Bowl!
Jeff Gordon, it’s just a couple of weeks till Daytona.
The only acceptable outcome would be for both teams to lose.
Unfortunately, that can’t happen.
Actually, it would be acceptable for Roger Goodell to just call the game off and declare the Packers this year’s champs.
Zach,
We agree. I don’t like either team, but the Giants and Eli i cannot stand. So I am left just as you hoping for the Pats.
I might take Phil’s thought and watch the Puppy Bowl. It would make my daughter happy.
Ted Thompson better do something about the defense. We sure missed Cullen Jenkins and I think if we still had him the Packers would have gone to the Super Bowl.
Now here’s something we all can nearly agree on:
We need to recall nearly all the Packer’s defense in favor of a more RIGHT and LEFT leaning team defensively!
The single biggest mistake Ted Thompson made was letting Cullen Jenkins go without finding a pass rushing defensive lineman to replace him. The Packers need a more consistent pass rush from their D-line in order to free up Clay Matthews to do his thing without getting double and triple-teamed.
Heck, while we’re at it the Pack needs to cut ties with AJ Hawk as well, because he’s a terrible linebacker.
And from a coaching standpoint, the defense as a group needs to get back to fundamentals, instead of always trying for the big play. Big plays will happen if the team plays solid fundamental defense, but taking big risks (as Woodson and T. Williams) are prone to do, doesn’t work out too often.
could not agree more.
Insult to injury on Jenkins was that A. The Eagles got him, and B. (and worse) they didn’t end up paying that much – 5 years, $30 million. All along, I’d figured that Jenkins would be gone – that somebody would offer way more money that it would make sense for the Packers to pay.
I think to some degree, the Packers were convinced that others especially Neal – would give them at least comparable performance to Jenkins – maybe he could have had he been anything remotely healthy. A mistake – but not a indefensible one.
Agree 100% on Hawk. Would really love to have a stud middle backer. Aside from being a really awful tackler, I really can’t think of anybody who’s been as bad of a blitzer as Hawk. Aside from the lack of pressure, blitzing him means you’re playing 10 on 11.
Honestly though, I think the biggest issue was probably the loss of Nick Collins. I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong – I always thought he was overrated. A good player to be sure, but “just a guy” back there. As the season it became more & more clear to me that he was more important to that defense than I’d realized – he was a difference maker not just in terms of interceptions, but able to read & cover ground and cover up others’ mistakes in coverage as well. Think of the times we saw broken coverage or somebody (even an aging, HOFer) juts plain get beat – and teams were able to cash in on it. With Collins, he was often able to pick up the coverage and in turned into a sack – or even just an unspectacular incomplete pass.
In my mind, if there’s any question about him coming back, I think Safety may just be as big or bigger of a need than a pass rusher.
Locke, I totally agree that Collins was invaluable to that defense, moreso than many realized. I’m not sure why Ted Thompson continues to stick by AJ Hawk (while getting rid of Nick Barnett, no less), but Hawk absolutely is not an asset to the defense.
As for the Pack letting Jenkins go and counting on Mike Neal to fill his spot, I think that was terrible judgment on the part of TT, because he was counting on a guy whose injury history does not instill confidence that he’ll be on the field consistently.
Also (and this is totally unrelated to the defense) I think the Packers should let Jermichael Finley leave via free agency. While his talent is undeniable, Finley’s a terrible route runner and his hands are inconsistent. Finley drops way too many balls to be considered a franchise tight end, and the money the team would spend on Finley could be spent upgrading their defense.
Not totally in agreement about that. My comments about Neal were an oversimplifaction. I don’t think for a minute that Thompson had all of his eggs in one basket. First & foremost, he (and probably everyone else) thought the Packers simply weren’t going to have a chance to re-sign Jenkins – that somebody would back up the armored truck. I don’t know if that burned some bridges or not, but conventional wisdom was Jenkins was gone from the beginning. While his role would be missed, I don’t think it was unreasonable to expect that a combination of Neal, plus improvement from Wynn & C.J. Williams would more or less fill that gap. They really didn’t develop. Add to that, Raji while still certainly solid, just didn’t have the same impact he had last year & Pickett missed significant time. Perhaps even more importantly, had Walden/Zombo/Brad Jones stepped up, and provided any sort of pass rush threat to compliment Matthews, I don’t think anyone is giving the loss of Jenkins a second thought.
I wasn’t much of a Barnett fan. I think in many ways, he’d worn out his welcome beyond just his play between the snaps (including the issues with his night club). Probably goes both ways – sometimes a change of scenery is good for everyone.
All that said, it will be very intersting to watch what happens with the draft this year. Not sure at all what I think about Finley. Sort of a high maintenance player, makes waves & drops too many balls. But also a tremendously talented guy and a serious mismatch problem. Looking at it from a replacement value perspective, he’s tough to replace. But Jennings will be a free agent in 2013, so the financials will be a huge factor in whether they re-sign Finley.
I will root that my buddy Mark’s stepdad brings his famous taco dip. I will root that “Luck” is a great episode tonight. I will root against heartburn and for pitchers and catchers to report.
Yeah, I can’t wait for pitchers and catchers to report.
You beat me to it…I think my team starts February 18th
You should come over for some ribs….I’ll have plenty.
Speaking asa Bear fan, and knowing the difference a great TE can make …Finley would look good in Chicago!
