CVS Caremark announced plans to eliminate the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products by October 1, 2014. I have to applaud them for doing so but wonder why it’s going to take so long.
But this is something that I have been advocating for some time. I don’t think I’ve written it here before but I have written letters to the editor and to my alderman about it. I suggested that the city refuse to grant tobacco licenses to pharmacies.
I can’t fathom why pharmacies, which are a lynchpin in the private health care system in the United States, find it ethical to sell merchandise that they know are essentially poisons.
Oh yes, I know the products are legal and at this point in time the use and sale of tobacco products is a given. But essential healthcare providers shouldn’t be ‘pushers’…or actually creating their own customers.
Target saw the light years ago and it certainly hasn’t hurt their growth and profitability in the time since.
