Whole books have been written on the subject. The best I have read by far is Thomas Sowell’s Conflict of Visions. Sowell is unmistakably conservative but this particular work offers an apolitical analysis of our conflicting political world views, throughout history until, roughly, the present.
I won’t offer a comprehensive view or critique of progressivism here since it would take forever.
