Celebrating Juneteenth Day!

Now that President Donald Trump has made Juneteenth Day famous…

This would have been the 49th Anniversary of Juneteenth Day Street Festival in Milwaukee, had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic. But there are numerous activities and events around the city to commemorate.

And for the first time, both a Milwaukee city office building and the Capitol Building in Madison will fly the Juneteenth flag. It is expected that City Hall will fly the flag in 2021.

Milwaukee County has approved Juneteenth Day as a floating holiday for county government and employees.

At 93, Texas activist Opal Lee hopes to see her campaign to make Juneteenth a national holiday finally succeed. And there is a change.org petition out there that you can sign!

Every year, Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee introduces a resolution to recognize the historical significance of Juneteenth. Introduced June 15, this year it has more than 200 co-sponsors — and that’s not all: she also plans this week to introduce a bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.
