Burke jobs plan plagiarized from other candidates

*Sigh* Really?!? Really?!?

Large portions of Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke’s jobs plan for Wisconsin appear to be copied directly from the plans of three Democratic candidates who ran for governor in previous election cycles.

Burke’s economic plan “Invest for Success” copies nearly-verbatim sections from the jobs plans of Ward Cammack, who ran for Tennessee governor in 2009 before withdrawing from the race, a 2008 plan from Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, now-Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe’s plan from his failed-2009 bid, and John Gregg who ran for governor of Indiana in 2012 and lost to Mike Pence.

Gregg’s plan is no longer online but BuzzFeed News accessed the text through an archiving service, while Cammack’s plan is available here.

Markell’s plan can be seen online here.

McAuliffe’s plan is likewise no longer online but BuzzFeed News has seen the text through an archiving service as well.

A spokesman for the Burke campaign told BuzzFeed News an “expert” named Eric Schnurer who also worked on the other campaigns as responsible for the similar text, a case of self-plagiarism.

It’s disappointing that no one on Mary Burke’s campaign thought to vet the job plan presented to them by Eric Schnurer to make sure there weren’t any problems wit the plan, and the sad part is that despite screwing over Burke’s campaign in this instance with his unoriginal jobs plan, Eric Schnurer will likely continue to get work as an “expert.”

  1. When one’s political party is desperate to shift the media focus from their failures in job creation, budget management, and environmental protection this is the kind of story that Republicans will champion and tout as legitimate mud to be slung, just as they are trying to shift the blame for the confusion they are causing with suppression, by blaming the GAB for a ballot design they don’t like, apparently because the Democratic candidates are still listed on it. Scapegoating and bullying, their preferred form of “governance,” as fair and intelligent public policy is beyond their capabilities.

Any person reading this would have to ask then, how or what the public should label the near word for word ALEC written legislation, and the Gtac written mining legislation introduced and passed by the state legislative majority since 2011. No, I guess you can’t call it plagiarism as the Republicans in the state received handsome financial campaign contributions to accept and pass into law, legislation they had little input in actually creating. Somebody help me with the right definition, please.

The Burke campaign was using ideas generally proposed and accepted by the entire Democratic establishment, big freaking deal it is not. However, I am not hearing anything in the MSM today about Republicans in WI accepting corporate campaign cash to further the exactly specified and written legislation designed to benefit the bottom line of those corporate donors and other grifters (i.e. as with J Kleefisch’s wealthy buddy and the child support modification proposals). Burke’s job plan, wherever parts of it can from, was, as I read it, meant to benefit a very large majority of WI citizens and not a particular segment of wealthy campaign contributors.

  2. Lazy Mary doesn’t have a jobs plan, or a single idea of her own and wants this job. She passed her plan off, most likely proof read it and said “wow that sounds fantastic they’ll buy that for sure”

She just lost big time and WI is better for it. The blue fisters have no chance to spin this on the republicans, the Koch brothers, or any other strawman it’s just sad to see it tried.

    She is toast.

Call up Brett Hulsey before it’s too late.

    1. Trademark,

Great argument for Gov. Walker to ask the three-member panel of the 7th Circuit to stay their decision on voter ID. As you point out, Ms. Burke’s toast. Let’s let Gov. Walker win big by giving all REGISTERED voters a chance to show their support for him. Another bonus, Gov. Walker doesn’t have to spend any more campaign dollars on advertising for Governor. He can save those for his presidential campaign.

    2. Myself nor anyone you label as blue fisters, has yet to spin this particular incident off on anyone you’ve mentioned or anyone else at all. The facts about the source were acknowledged, responsibility for the over-sight was ACCEPTED by the campaign like normal and honest adults would be expected to do when presented with facts, and remedial action in terminating the services of the author were taken.

There is nothing about reading a GOOD jobs plan and agreeing that it is a good plan, despite where it originated and nobody is arguing that team Burke initially hired this person to help draft a jobs plan. And if you were quick enough to catch it, this consultant took work from other plans which he originally authored anyway, so technically he is accused of plagiarizing from himself, which makes it what, exactly?

Now let’s take a look at your head-up-your-hinderers crowd who have failed to even read Scott Walker’s Jobs plan written in giant type, characterized by everyone as likely written by a third-grader and examine for once why we are 35th in job creation in yesterday’s report, DUE TO SEVERAL OTHER STATES DECLINING, and not due to any actual economic gains from Walker’s regime.

We know why it is that you only show up at BB to attempt to gloat about something that has no actual substance to it. There is nothing, absolutely nothing for you to be proud of or tell the truth about that illustrates any Republican success that benefits anyone in the majority of WI residents or provides for all of our health, safety or general welfare or happiness.

      1. Lots of ALEC whining above and below.

Lazy Mary passed this off as hers. Yet it is recycled word for word vague liberal talking points as far back as 2009 so it can’t be hers.

She didn’t give one idea of her own to be written into original words to deal with the current Wisconsin economy, and you still support this failure of a manufactured candidate.

Keep making excuses for yourself. The rest of us see the failure in this Madison radical.

        1. So you’ve added nothing new to what everyone already knows and has been stated publicly from the Burke HQs. 10 paragraphs out of 49 pages equals “no ideas of her own.” What brilliant insight you bring.

You come for a bit of derogatory name calling over a tiny fraction of written text, you refuse to reply to anything mentioned about the failure of the repubs agenda to further economic or jobs growth in WI, and FYI, most of the “left” leaning crowd would be more than thrilled if Mary Burke had a single spec of “radical,” anything in her economic plan or her jobs plan. She’s praising Reagan, your likely hero, for keerist’s sake.

If FACTS happen to appear to be excuses to you, that is another apparent personal problem that no one here is going to be able to help you with. Yes repeat-it-publicans completely copied ALEC legislation served it up to WI citizens as original thought, enacted it and it was signed by a “governor,” (presidential wanna-be). As dangerous as ALEC laws that were enacted are, ( that job creating castle doctrine, cuts to SNAP benefits, trans-vaginal ultrasounds, voter suppression ID requirements) Mary Burke’s non-plagiarized 10 paragraphs out of 49 pages is only part of a campaign platform and not part of presently established law, and it is clear that such an important distinction would never occur to you without being told it is so.

Parse it any way you want, you aren’t even barking up a tree, or howling at the moon. An impossible feat considering where I’ve already suggested your head is at, and, with every idiotic comment you flood in here, you continue to provide proof positive my assessment is absolutely correct. But hey, I wouldn’t want to deny you, your free speech. We can all use another laugh here.

        2. The thing about “borrowing” someone else’s plan, to me, is if it doesn’t work, do you have any idea how to tweak or change it. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn’t.

  3. I don’t see this as a big deal, Zach. The guy probably saved Mary a ton of money. As long as the plan is strong, we shouldn’t worry about plagerism in politics.

  4. This really does not amount to much, it is a lot of phony outrage. “Plagiarism” is a very loaded word, and it is being used to make this into something a lot bigger than it actually is.
The Burke campaign had Eric Schnurer on board to help draft the jobs plan. He got that role by having a track record of doing good work with other candidates, as well as in the media, and having presented economic ideas that were agreeable to what the Burke campaign had in mind.
Schnurer used ideas that he put into previous campaigns, this is not stealing work from others and calling it your own, which is what “plagiarism” entails.
I think the real imagined sin here is that they feel threatened by coherent jobs plan for Wisconsin, as compared to the Walker plan, which he did not create, and has failed throughout his tenure.

    1. You keep telling yourself that

      buzzfeed

      “Here’s McAuliffe:
Our colleges and universities have made great progress in aligning requirements for course work to make transferring credits easier.

      And here’s Burke:
Our university and college systems have made great progress in aligning requirements for course work to make transferring credits easier.”

      1. Buzzfeed

        “Here’s Gregg:
Successful entrepreneurship requires a good idea and strong work ethic. But it also requires money to finance its development, and technical and management skills to prosper. In today’s economic climate, many small business owners – especially first-time entrepreneurs — find it almost impossible to borrow the money they need to start or grow their business. . As Governor, I will create a Hoosier Capital Access Partners….

        And here’s Burke:
Successful entrepreneurship requires a good idea and a strong work ethic. But it also requires capital to finance its development, and technical and management skills to prosper. In today’s economic climate, many small business owners especially first-time entrepreneurs – find it almost impossible to borrow the money they need to start or grow their business in Wisconsin. In spite of our world-class institutions of higher learning and research, some promising ventures to come out of Wisconsin seek greener pastures where they can find startup funding.”

  5. Agree that this is not a big deal. We knew that Walker et al would be grinding down on Burke during this phase of the campaign. Mary should use the points mentioned by the above commenter, and then ove on. Take a page from Walker’s playbook.

    1. “Here’s Cammack:
Expanding intern programs to provide help to small farmers and also give students direct agricultural education and experience.

      And here’s Burke:
Expanding intern programs to provide help to small farmers and also give students direct agricultural education and experience.”

  6. The GOP is good at taking the works of ALEC and passing it along as if it was original thought– but this isn’t plagiarism…or is it?

    1. “Markell’s plan

      Here’s Markell:
Career Pathways, which exist in some Delaware schools today, offer students the opportunity to begin training for a high-wage career in high school by taking a series of progressively more advanced courses in a particular area like electronics, computer programming, allied health or engineering. Career Pathways programs blend academic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) coursework with cutting-edge vocational training to give students both the knowledge and the know-how to compete in the new economy; students complete the regular high school curriculum, but they also have the opportunity to take specialized college courses in their “career path” or professional discipline.

      And here’s Burke:
Wisconsin high school students to begin training for a high-wage, high- growth career before they graduate from high school by taking a series of progressively more advanced courses in a particular area – like electronics, computer programming, allied health or engineering. Career Pathways programs blend academic science, technology, engineering and math coursework with cutting-edge vocational training to give students both the knowledge and the know-how to compete in the new economy. Students complete the regular high school curriculum, but they also have the opportunity to take specialized college courses in their “career path” or professional discipline, creating a seamless pathway from high school to a credential or further education.”

  7. Why reinvent the wheel? if the ideas and policies are sound and can be supported by economic standards, why “spin wheels” trying to develop yet another strategy?

  8. A plan you can really put faith in. Yippie more gubement

    “Here’s Cammack:
Supporting the development of public-private partnerships by working to match small farmers with business professionals to help farmers improve management, develop new markets plans and improve use of risk management tools and risk reduction strategies.

    And here’s Burke:
Supporting the development of public- private partnerships by working to match small farmers with business professionals to help farmers improve management, develop new markets plans and improve use of risk management tools and risk- reduction strategies.”

  9. So this jobs plan is borrowed from somewhere else, so what? Walker’s entire governorship has been directed by his puppet masters at ALEC and his billionaire contributors. a dead even race means no one is “toast” until the votes are counted, and trying to keep people from voting only makes them more determined to get to the polls. I don’t care what Mary Burke’s jobs plan is, at least she appears to have one and hasn’t wasted anyone’s time proposing bringing failed tea party programs like drug testing welfare recipients to Wisconsin and passing the idea off as her own. Scottie hardly provides us with creative or cutting edge governance, there’s no way Mary Burke could be worse. As far as I’m concerned she has one foolproof thing going for her — she’s not Scott Walker — and that’s enough to get my vote.

  10. The lack of business experience of the Walker camp and its defenders is pretty obvious on this one as apparently they don’t know business plans, marketing plans, etc. are re-used year after year with updates to sections and we all borrow from each other. Storm in a tea cup. With that said, it was avoidable had the team simply assigned someone to cast the plan more into Burke’s own words.

  11. It is absolutely laughable that anyone would attempt to defend the actions by Burke’s team. This outright plagiarism is indefensible. If walker was caught word for word printing someone else’s thoughts and passed it off as his original ideas you guys would be riding him like a broken down horse.

    1. Stop whining. We’re not defending it- we’re saying it’s not a big deal because it’s no different than what Burke stands for.

And that jobs plan is a helluva lot better than doubling down on the same ALEC-written failures that led us to last place in jobs growth in the Midwest. Which is what your boy Scotty.

I’d stop digging the ditch if I were you, Chrissy.

  12. To be clear, the Buzzfeed article notes this is a case of self-plagiarism, as the consultant in question (Eric Schnurer) wrote all the other plans used to come up with Mary Burke’s jobs plan, which Schnurer wrote.

  13. i have a GREAT IDEA for all you Libs bitching about Walker & his reforms: MOVE to Illinois.

There, you can have the state finances you so obviously miss: Billions in deficit, public union pensions sucking more n more tax dollars out of the public AND HIGHER taxes to, NOT lower ANY of the deficit, but add to it.

Just like Jim Doyle did… and Mary Burke was a part of it. Yeah… Save the people of Wisconsin of THAT déjà vu nightmare and just move south.

    1. Black,

I’m sorry you haven’t seen “ICYMI, Wisconsin ranks dead last in the Midwest job numbers.”

      http://wisdems.org/news/press/view/2014-06-icymi-wisconsin-ranks-dead-last-in-the-midwest-on-jo

Because Gov. Walker’s done such a really bad job, a lot of folks are already “moving to Illinois” and to Minnesota….

OT, when you want to masquerade as a joe-six pack conservative, don’t use foreign phrases. If you’re so dumb that you violate that that simple rule just please, please, please, don’t use a FRENCH phrase.

You even know where the accent marks go. That makes you sound like a log-cabin Republican, but if that were the case you’d be voting for Ms. Burke.

Stay with what works, “(Federal) Taxes For Revenue Are Obsolete.”

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/warren-mosler/taxes-for-revenue-are-obs_b_542134.html

      Thanks in advance.

Is the “Black_Hat” handle supposed to be macho and menacing? Do you see why using a FRENCH phrase isn’t helping you?

  14. To be clear, my original point stands. If it was found that Walker’s economic plan or plans had direct quotes lifted from other governors plans regardless of who wrote it you guys on this blog would never let him hear the end of it. No amount of miss speak or excuse making can make up for the fact that this has happened.

    1. Yes, your original point stands proud in the dust-bin of irrelevant conjecture. As with voter ID, chasing a non-existent problem that the ID would not prevent in the first place, you and others have no valid grounds to stand on with these particular charges of plagiarism, so you project onto others the behavior only you have, to this point, exhibited wildly without thinking at all (Pavlov’s dogs would admire your response to the political dog-whisltes).

A bit more simply (fully realizing the audience I am addressing), you’ve got nothing good to report about your, “side,” so your only justification to NOT immediately flee and abandon those political failures you champion, is to demonize other people and make shit up to smear anything and anybody NOT stuck within your failed ideology and leadership. Just because they are currently in power, doesn’t make anything they’ve done socially valuable, democratically admirable or correct, or even legal in some cases.

If you think I am being partisan, do a little search of what I think about Obomba around BB. Obomba/Walker willing and interchangeable peons to the wealthy, who care nothing but for themselves and totally faithful to their patrons.

  15. There’s one reason the GOPs and their media megaphones keep trying to talk about this- to distract from their failures. Look at what’s come out in the last three days.

    1. Wisconsin had the worst job growth in the Midwest from the “gold standard ” report, and 4,300 jobs lost in August. And Walker wants to double down on these policies.

    2. A WEDC audit showed that millions in taxpayer funded loans were simply written off, because WEDC had no ability to follow up and make the corporates pay the state back. Oh, and that WEDC staff expenses went up 34% in one year with “merit increases” in the year after Act 10.

    3. Walker’s DNR approved a high-capacity well in Adams County for a corporate farm, and the company’s employees gave $85,000 to the Walker campaign a month later.

All the GOPs have is lies and distraction at this point. Hence, their desperation to cling to this total non-story. Besides ALEC is the first and last word for “copied ideas”.

  16. When pointing out FACTS about Burke’s economic plan is labeled “making shit up”. I struggle for an adequate response. As you well know, Burke did not introduce this plan as “the best ideas for Wisconsin. That my paid advisors gathered from recycled ideas across the country”. She sold it as HER plan. HER PLAN, her plan just in Case you can’t read or comprehend that. Please go I. Believing that the common person is shaking their head in disbelief over the outright stupidity of her clear mistake in regard to HER economic “plan”.

    1. No one doubted for even an instant that you struggle with any adequate or valid response to facts, and as proof, you’ve yet to offer any here. You have obviously not read or comprehended any previous comments here that state specifically that team Burke still claims it as her plan, and furthermore, to the specific that no one here is denying that either. Origination of the policies that she put together in HER version of a plan having nothing to do with the potential for success with or quality of the plan. Conversely we have heard and seen the disastrous results of Walker’s plan in action, have measurable results, so we don’t need to move to Illinois to be subjected to the next $3B deficit as was recently suggested. Walker’s plan is apparently saving us that trouble and potential moving expense.

      1. Well said, NQ. GOPs like Chrissy care more about poses than results. Which is why these losers would rather “Stand with Walker” than adjust and improve the fortunes of the state. The “common person”? They care about what each governor candidate will do.

And results matter. That’s why the whiny GOPs keep reaching and distracting, because their results SUCK.
