Milwaukee County could lose aid due to mismanagement at Mental Health Complex

As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting, Milwaukee County could lose somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 million in federal and state aid for its Mental Health Complex over several reported cases of patients who were sexually assaulted by other patients. According to the report, Milwaukee County was directed in January to make numerous improvements to staff training and procedures, based on a federal inspection of the complex in Wauwatosa. While those improvements have already been made or promised, the county still faces further sanctions for failing to effectively manage the complex to protect patients, and the county has until April 21 to correct the management problems, according to Elizabeth Surgener, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Chicago. The management failures include a failure to conduct full physical examinations of patients to determine whether sexual contact had taken place. In addition to sanctions from the federal government, the county could also face sanctions from the state if the issues plaguing the Mental Health Complex aren’t corrected.

The situation at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex is just another example of the failed leadership, mismanagement, and lack of oversight that have become hallmarks of Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker’s time in office, and given his history of mismanagement, it’s becoming increasingly clear Walker simply isn’t ready to lead the state as our next governor.
