Tammy Baldwin raises $750k, has over $1 million in the bank for U.S. Senate run

Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin, who has already announced she’ll be a candidate to replace retiring Sen. Herb Kohl in 2012, announced very solid fundraising numbers last week. Between July and September Baldwin raised $738,000, leaving her with $1.53 million in the bank for her run.

Thus far Rep. Baldwin is the only Democratic candidate in the race to succeed Sen. Kohl, while the Republican field is already crowded, with former Gov. Tommy Thompson, former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann, and Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald all having announced their intentions to run.

While Tammy Baldwin’s campaign fundraising certainly seems to be off to a strong start with their fundraising, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that next year’s U.S. Senate race will likely end up being the most expensive race in the history of our state, and Rep. Baldwin will need to make sure she has the necessary campaign funds to mount a campaign that counter the kinds of money we’re likely to see poured into the U.S. Senate race as Republicans try to flip that seat.
