Let’s Tell The Truth About The Repeal of Residency Requirements!

In an article about a likely challenge of the end of public employee residency by the City of Milwaukee on state constitutional grounds, Milwaukee Journal staff writer Don Walker writes:

On June 30, Gov. Scott Walker signed into law a provision that ends residency in all local units of government statewide, including Milwaukee.

Let’s keep it real here…Governor Walker didn’t sign a simple provision banning local residency rules…on June 30th, he signed the 2013 – 2015 Wisconsin State Budget that included as a NON-FISCAL item the elimination of residency requirements. An issue this important and potentially divisive should have been a separate bill with it’s own discussion and public hearings…and most probably should be on local ballots as a referendum issue!

After the budget vote, Democratic members of the Assembly said they were going to focus on the errors in this budget for the 2014 elections…let’s start right now and remind everyone that this not only violates local control, was in the budget, and broke a campaign promise from the governor about pork and non-fiscal items in the budget!!!
