Mayor Barrett attacked with a pipe outside State Fair

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was attacked late last night, having been beaten with a pipe while calling 911 to report an altercation between a woman and a man.

Thankfully, Mayor Barrett is said to be in good condition this morning.

  1. I think we really need to look at some kind of ban or restriction on this type of pipe. Its big business who manufacture and distribute these pipes. We need to get organized.

    1. Not cool, Bryan. Save that for another thread, not when someone was actually beaten and needed to be taken to a hospital.

Barrett was with his family leaving the fair when he got attacked (my wife and I were just leaving when it happened). What kind of sociopath starts attacking the mayor with a pipe when he’s with his family? He and his family are in my prayers for a quick and full recovery.

      1. I absolutely pray for the quick and full recovery of the mayor. If this was a handgun that was used as a weapon you can be sure the blogs would be blowing up. Every time a tragedy occurs with a firearm it happens. Why is that?

Back to this ban on pipes, I think we should start with the mean looking ones first. Even though they operate the same as the other pipes, this just makes “sense”.

        1. Bryan, the blogs are blowing up, in case you haven’t noticed. Nearly every blog I read on a regular basis has posted something about what happened to the mayor.

As to the point you’re trying to make about handguns, I’ll just note that if the individual in question had been in possession of a handgun, the outcome of this situation would likely have been much worse, both for the woman the man was attacking, as well as Mayor Barrett. Thanks for proving my point though!

          1. Yes, the blogs are blowing up, but I was referring to them blowing up over gun control. Thank the Lord that a handgun was not used in this situation. My only point was the double standard of when you can comment on the politics of a serious event such as this one or one of the terrible shootings on college campuses. At what point is it ok to discuss politics (i.e. gun control) to further an agenda in the wake of a tragedy? Was it equally inappropriate after the VT or DeKalb incidents, or was that ok because it was an agenda you agree with? Not trying to be a jerk here, just trying to figure it out.

            1. Bryan, my point is that gun control has absolutely nothing to do with this incident. I know you really want to argue the merits of your position regarding citizens carrying guns, but that has no bearing on the Mayor of Milwaukee being attacked by a pipe-wielding criminal.

              1. You are absolutely right there, Zack. And even though my question has not been answered, I will back off this one. I wish the mayor a quick and speedy recovery. I would never speak ill toward any elected official even if I disagreed with them. I hope there is never another time to have this debate, but if there is I will return and enjoy talking with you. Until then goodbye and God bless America.

  2. I read the article refering to the attack with intense sceptism. Why were no independent witnesses quoted? Funny that the only quotes were from his supporters. Were their no witnesses in the vicinity of this supposed assualt (either the woman or the mayor). This was a large activity filled with hundreds if not thousands of people. But not even the woman that was assaulted was interviewed for this article. One must also ask why the mayor felt compeled to place the lives of his children and charges in danger. There was no mention of injury to the supposed victim. The article does not say that the woman was even being threatened. Personally I think the mayor reclessly endangered the children to interfere in what was not his business in order to play the hero. What a fool, he got what he deserved. Thank God the children were not harmed to satify the mayor’s delusions.

    1. Sam, Tom Barrett didn’t “play the hero;” he happened upon a criminal act being committed and he did what any good citizen would have done – he called the police.

Are you trying to argue he should have turned a blind eye and walked away while a pipe-wielding man did whatever he wanted to his victim?

  3. The “mayor’s delusions”? Mayor Barrett was doing the right thing. Calling the cops in that case was the right thing to do. He did not rush in and say “I’ll save you, honey!” and try to beat off the thug. (Not one of Walker’s leftist thugs, I’ll bet.) He called the cops. Mayor Barrett was doing the right thing.

  4. Sam is an idiot – nuff said. But perhaps Mayor Barrett might change his view regarding legalizing concealed carry in Wisconsin. I’m tired of the bad guys ALWAYS having the weapons. Isn’t it time that Wisconsin (and Illinois too) joins the ranks of the other 48 states that allow concealed carry?

    1. I doubt Mayor Barrett will change his view on legalizing concealed carry, because statistically speaking, allowing folks to carry firearms doesn’t result in lower crime rates.
