Here’s a word of advice for newly elected State Representative Joe Knilans, a Republican representing the 44th Assembly District: be sure you’re living legally in the district you were elected to represent. On Thursday Wisconsin Democrats on Thursday filed a complaint against Rep. Knilans, who unlawfully lives in his brother’s basement. Knilans has said publicly that he resides in a basement that is not properly recognized as a residence, putting his eligibility for election in doubt.
As reported by Tony Galli on the Inside Scoop blog, Janesville city assessor records describe the basement as unfinished, and Janesville building and development services manager Gale Price said he wants to verify the room has required exits, windows and fire safety features.
Legal requirements aside, I’m mostly of the belief that if a district is dumb enough to elect someone that doesn’t live there, then let them.
Good point. If they want a Representative who doesn’t live in their district, then so be it.
That’s kind of an example of democracy failing. Wouldn’t be the first time though.
if you cant vote in a district you shouldnt be able to represent it
The law says you aren’t.
