Barbara Lawton for Governor

I was talking with Amy this morning about who might be a good candidate to replace Scott Walker and she suggested Barbara Lawton, the Lt. Governor under Jim Doyle.  She was originally slated to run against Walker in 2010 but dropped out of the race citing personal reasons.  I think she would be a fabulous governor.

If you remember, radio “personality” Jerry Bader cited unnamed sources who claimed that Lawton had had an affair.  After being threatened with a lawsuit, Bader walked back his comments:

I have lost confidence in the sources that provided information yesterday regarding Lt. Gov Barbara Lawton. Therefore I cannot stand by the story posted yesterday.

Bader was later suspended for two weeks following the incident but the damage was done.  And I expect that Ms. Lawton was tired of the crap the wingnuts fling like shit from a monkey cage.

I think Lawton would make an excellent candidate for Governor and I hope she considers running against Walker when the time comes.

  1. I recall thinking at the time she dropped out that Doyle had endorsed Barrett and Doyle had the Obama team behind him. I thought at the time she knew it was a lost cause.

Anyway, I would like to have her seriously think about running. Do you know if anyone has approached her?

    1. I don’t know, it was just a thought Amy had as we were driving from Waukesha to Madison this morning.

    2. I just thought of another great choice for Governor & that would be Joanne Kloppenburg! After what she’s just been through though I highly doubt that she’d even consider it.
Actually my first choice would be one of the Dem 14. Have any of them been approached about running? Which one of them do you think would be able to win? Considering all of the damage that Walker has done to WI & its people (in such a short time) I can’t believe that his ratings are still so high.

      1. There aren’t many good statewide candidates among the Wisconsin 14, with the exception of Jon Erpenbach, but I hear he’s not interested.

      2. Joanne Kloppenburg would have will be a great jurist and would have been great on the state Supreme Court…but she is not the kind of candidate that can fire up and electorate and I dn’t believe she has the political moves to navigate and survive in the Capitol.

  2. I would like to see Ed Garvey run (yes again!) for Gov. Listing just a few of my reasons: He’s got the name recognition, is of strong character, very intelligent, even tempered, excellent debater, knows how to run a campaign & won’t back down from the enemy. We need a person like Ed right now to restore honesty & sanity back to the State Of Wisconsin.

    1. “We need a person like Ed right now to restore honesty & sanity back to the State Of Wisconsin!”

      I’m up to the challenge…LOL!

    2. We don’t need to lose another election, and that’s what would happen if Ed Garvey were the Democratic candidate. Ed Garvey doesn’t know how to run a campaign, and his history of losing elections is proof of that.

      1. I feel the same way about Tom Barret. His 2010 bid for governor was a lesson in how not to run a campaign. Disorganized was an understatement.

  3. In regards to Lawton, there’s no way someone in an open marriage can win a gubernatorial race in the state of Wisconsin as much as I wish that weren’t the case.

In regards to Garvey, he’s too polarizing and I don’t think anyone would take him seriously.

        1. He might but to say he wont win because he is too polarizing is laughable when running against scott walker who is probably the most polarizing figure in our states history.

  4. While we are at it….

I support the candidacies of Tom Barrett, Herb Kohl, Peter Barca, Jon Erpenbach or Dave Obey to recall Walker.

  5. I remembered she wrote this editorial regarding the Prosser issue and thinking at the time she was spot on–Prosser is nothing but a bully.

    A case study in bullying

    By Barbara Lawton

    ……..

Perhaps the better way to report this is as a case study in bullying, one that unfortunately unfolds in our highest court. Our children know how dangerous this can be. And they would likely identify those justices who gloss over the serious nature of both physical and verbal assaults issuing from Prosser as textbook enablers.

But the bully himself is the source of the problem, particularly when that bully does not recognize his behavior for what it is. According to the police reports, Prosser asked what any self-respecting man does when he finds his hands on a woman’s neck. The proper answer, of course, is that a self-respecting man doesn’t “find his hands” around a woman’s neck in the first place.

This incident arose in the context of a state mired in partisan conflict. Putting hands on a woman’s neck should not be a partisan issue. People of all political beliefs can be united in condemning abusive behavior.

Prosser betrays his disrespect for the court by his own admission of concern for a political agenda over meticulous deciding on the law. He pronounces his disrespect for law enforcement.

Should we look to the children for the appropriate remedy to this situation? Would they suggest suspension or expulsion? The Wisconsin Supreme Court must be held to the highest standards of both dignity and integrity. Our confidence in this democracy depends on it.

  6. Lawton couldn’t get anyone behind her when she tried to raise funds. I’d rather see her in a “supporter on the stump” role, and then get a serious Cabinet-level post to advocate for social services.

Your best candidates to defeat Walker are Kind, Barca, Erpenbach (who is interested, he’d be running for Congress if he wasn’t), and perhaps Sen. Bob Jauch. No more retreads like Garvey, Barrett, or even Obey.

  7. Herb Kohl? It’s the first I’ve heard of it … but … say, that idea has merit! Well regarded, name recognition, not polarizing …

    1. I’m betting on Ron Kind. There has to be a really good reason he’s not running for the Senate seat currently occupied by Herb Kohl.

      1. So i should not put away my ANTI – Ron kind stories just yet???? I absolutely 100% support anyone else over ron kind….

I would vote for segway over ron kind

          1. Anyone on the dem side….if he runs and wins the nomination, I would maybe vote for him in the general while holding my nose.

Why would the democrats want an anti – labor corporatist DLC democrat running our state? Ask Chicago how its working out for them.

  8. People like Falk, Kohl, Barrett, and Obey all have some drawbacks.
On the other hand we need someone with name recognition. It is only a short period of time between collecting the recall signatures and the election. Just saying.
