Law firm that represented Republicans in redistricting withheld documents from courts

Why am I not surprised that the law firm that represented Republican lawmakers after they were sued over their hyperpartisan redistricting plan withheld some documents despite being ordered by a court to turn over all documents relating to that redistricting plan?

Attorneys who helped lawmakers draw new election maps last year launched an internal investigation of their firm last month to determine why some documents were not turned over in a court case, according to a document filed late Thursday.

In its filing, the firm Michael Best & Friedrich acknowledged it had not released emails to the court that it should have. The firm has hired the Chicago law firm Schiff Hardin LLP to represent it and has retained Project Leadership Associates to conduct an independent forensic examination of its computers to determine how many documents were improperly withheld, the filing said.

Michael Best has taken the steps as it tries to beat back an attempt by two groups to get a court order that would force the firm to allow a review of its electronic files by a firm of their choosing. The groups have also said they may seek court sanctions against Michael Best.

This is just another example of how lawless and corrupt Wisconsin’s Republican lawmakers and their affiliated party infrastructure are, and it’s shameful that a state once known for clean government has been sullied in such a manner.

  1. Since MBF can’t be trusted to follow court orders their computers should be seized by U.S. Marhsalls. On the face of it, this looks like a conspiracy to subvert justice.

  2. SEND THEM TO JAIL! It’s the only way they’ll follow the law.

Well, that, or throw out the maps due to refusal to release evidence. Either works for me.
