U.S. Attorney James Santelle announces federal review of fatal shooting of Dontre Hamilton

Yesterday U.S. Attorney James Santelle announced his office would investigate whether a federal civil rights prosecution is warranted in the fatal shooting of Dontre Hamilton by former Milwaukee police officer Christopher Manney.

Santelle’s announcement came after an attorney representing Hamilton’s family announced he would ask for such a federal review, after Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm announced he would not file state criminal charges in the April 30 incident at Red Arrow Park.

“This is a case that which cries out for justice, criminal charges against Christopher Manney, and accountability to Dontre Hamilton’s family,” Jonathan S. Safran said in a statement.

Speaking to supporters outside the Federal Courthouse, Nate Hamilton, brother of Dontre Hamilton, said he and the other family members will remain strong, won’t waver and won’t turn their backs on injustice.

“We deserve justice,” he said. “Justice is our right.”
