But I thought conservatives were opposed to government handouts…

Via Monologues of Dissent comes this gem regarding Wisconsin’s voucher school program.

In a recent report from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction reveals that over 76% of applicants to the amped-up voucher program implemented by Gov. Scott Walker and his political cronies do not attend regular public schools.  Of these, a whopping 67.3% (!) already attend private schools, with the remainder being home-schooled, attending no school, or out of state applicants.  A paltry 24.3%(503 applicants) currently attend regular public school.

And so I leave you all with this, again courtesy of Monologues of Dissent.

So you oppose government handouts...

  1. Last time I checked people were paying taxes to send their kids to school and that is what they are getting so their kids can get a good education.

    1. And people are paying their taxes for maintaining infrastructure, too, and for a responsive lean government that listened to them. NOT to be kept waiting on hold for hours with questions for the government agencies, NOT for $2.2B in tax breaks to big corporate campaign donors who have produced nothing in the way of better schools or jobs or a growing economy that helps the average voter on either side of the political isle. Only helps the Koch, Enbridge and Cline types, the widows like Hendricks and a realtors, all who have a special place reserved in Hell.

  2. I don’t know if this is widely known or not so I apologize if everyone already knows this but private school tuition is now tax deductible for Wisconsin starting with the 2014 tax year. $4000 per student for elementary (K-8) and $10,000 per student for secondary (9-12).

If that isn’t a tax cut for the rich I don’t know what is.

    1. Ummm, that isn’t what I said at all.

I don’t have any kids either, but I think a well educated society benefits everyone within it. I’m willing to chip in for that.

Furthermore, your property taxes are also deductible, provided you aren’t subject to AMT.

  3. Taxpayer dollars are now “your personal money”? That’s the definition of a straight welfare payment, as is the write-off of private school tuition that Dan notes above.

And oh yeah, you also still get to write off your property taxes that you pay to the local public school as well. What a deal!

    1. Sure parents have a choice to pull their kids out of public schools (which do a better job of educating students than voucher schools, but I digress). But you don’t get to put the taxes that I PAY and put it into your “Jesus rode a dinosaur” or “profit at the expense of quality” school. I have to deal with the consequences of your weak-mindedness and resentment of education, and I don’t feel like pulling your freight when I have enough problems trying to get by on my own.

Steve, I get why you don’t like teachers- you peaked in high school, ended up with a mediocre job, and got passed up by people who worked hard and learned something while you were goofing off. It doesn’t mean you should abuse laws and taxpayer dollars to get even. This voucher system isn’t “choice”, it’s a two-tier system that dumps all the kids with special needs (and added costs) onto public schools. Add in that absurd tax cut for tuition for your creationist school, and you have a total “separate but equal” education system that was rightfully banned in this country 60 years ago.
