Politico is reporting that India Walton, an unabashed socialist, is poised to become mayor of Buffalo after upsetting four term incumbent Mayor Byron Brown in last night’s Democratic primary. Politico notes that there hasn’t been a socialist mayor of a major American city since Milwaukee’s Frank Zeidler left office in 1960. Given that Buffalo hasn’t had a Republican mayor since John Kennedy was in office, Walton’s stunning primary upset of Brown practically guarantees she’ll assume office next January.
Meanwhile in Milwaukee, the political landscape is so thoroughly dominated by mainstream democrats that Congresswoman Gwen Moore has yet to sign onto the Medicare for All Act of 2021. What’s a frustrated Milwaukee socialist/progressive democrat to do?
Attend the March for Medicare for All in Milwaukee on July 24th. Who knows, maybe events like these will inspire some young socialist to run for Milwaukee mayor some day.
