This past week Marjorie Taylor Greene took a stand against the United States providing continuing military support for Ukraine in their efforts to repel an invasion by Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
Far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Thursday vowed to nix American funding for Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion if the GOP retakes Congress in next week’s midterm elections.
“The only border they care about is Ukraine, not America’s southern border,” Greene said of Democrats at a rally in Iowa. “Under Republicans, not another penny will go to Ukraine. Our country comes first. They don’t care about our border or our people.”
Well even if you think our country comes first in each and every world event…this stand still goes against every Cold Warrior stance taken by the Republican Party in the last half of the 20th Century. I can’t imagine President Ronald ‘Tear Down This Wall’ Reagan would support anything similar.
And yes, Putin does care about more than just the border of Ukraine. He’s a Soviet era oligarch and has stated that he’s interested in re-establishing the USSR with all of its former member states included. That would put him at direct odds with NATO since many Iron Curtain nations are now our NATO allies.
And this type of appeasement didn’t work in 1938 and instead emboldened Adolph Hitler and allowed him to launch the Second World War. There’s no reason to believe Putin wouldn’t read a similar message in 2022 if the US pulled back from Ukraine.
And yes, I would prefer defending democracy in Kyiv rather than Warsaw or Berlin or Paris or Athens Georgia. And no, Greene isn’t the only traitor from the radical right who has voiced this opinion. But we mustn’t allow Ukraine to become a 21st Century Sudetenland and people like Greene and Lauren Boebert and Kevin McCarthy and the others should be called out as the thralls of the Kremlin that they all are.
