Ideas On Wisconsin State Income Tax Reform

After showing little taste for a flat tax during the 2022 campaign cycle, the Republicans in charge in Madison are now actually considering the unwarranted tax cut for the state’s fat cats without any actual relief for most of the rest of us (Wisconsin GOP’s Latest Bait and Switch? The Flat Tax!). And another crackpot idea has been suggested by conservatives outside the august halls of the Capitol, to eliminate the state income tax entirely and replace it with an additional 3% state sales tax. Another ridiculous boondoggle to reward the wealthy while creating an actual additional tax burden on the lower earners in the state.

Here’s the current chart of Wisconsin state income tax rates and brackets:

This is relatively easy. First eliminate the 3.54% bracket entirely and those earning less than $12,760 pay no taxes at all. And then eliminate the 4.65% bracket entirely and those earning less than $25,520 pay no taxes at all.

Cash falls directly into the wallets of those most in need of the money and those most likely to spend it and put it right back into the economy. Everyone wins except for the big spenders who own the Wisconsin GOP leadership.
