Seriously….where are all those jobs Scott Walker promised us?!?

Yesterday I noted two layoff notices affecting workers here in Wisconsin, and at the time I noted Gov. Scott Walker’s efforts to create jobs here in Wisconsin seem be failing miserably.

Well, today’s a new day, and we have a new set of layoff notices.

First there’s St. Francis-based Stark & Roth LLC, which announced plans to terminate 59 employees by the end of the year as part of the winding down of its multi-strategy hedge fund business.

In other layoff-related news, Provimi Foods Inc. announced it will eliminate 50 jobs as it shuts down its kill floor and other operations at its meat-packaging plant in Seymour, which is near Green Bay. In announcing the layoffs, Provimi cited a downturn in customer demand.

Hmmm…..a “downturn in customer demand.” The idea that it’s consumers that stimulate the economy, not the so-called “job creators” sounds vaguely familiar, perhaps because we’ve discussed that very idea HERE and HERE.

When will Gov. Walker and his fellow Republican lawmakers wake up and realize that it’s not handouts and tax breaks to corporations that creates jobs – it’s a strong middle class?

  1. You can thank Obama for the current impediments to job creation that have made it difficult. It takes more time to create jobs in a hostile climate. Layoffs occur in good and bad economies so cherry picking to suit your political objectives while failing to mention any job creation is self serving. If Obama had spent time working on the economy instead of Obama care that most people want to repeal maybe we would be doing better off job wise. If he spent time working on enabling job creation instead of out campaigning maybe that would help also but I doubt it since he lacks the understanding of basic economic principles.

    1. Again the Patrick ambiguity – talking out of both sides of the mouth. Which Patrick today? Perfidious Patrick. Perfidious Patrick take your own advice. Scott Walker ran on job creation. He is being held to his own standards. Walker did put forth and implement the GOP economic salvo – supply side economics, trickle – down economics, tort reform, public sector shrinkage, unsustainable tax breaks, and of, course a whole lot of superfluous legislation focusing on Conservative social issues that hasn’t any pertinence to the economy – a climate so friendly to business one might call it perverse. It isn’t working. It won’t work because the ideology behind it is wrong-headed and has been proven wrong in the real world since 1981.

      Obama’s stimulus did work, but it was too small. But it was all that could get passed by the Do-Nothing Conservative Congress that have vowed to do nothing but see that Obama is a one term president – the economy be damned if need be. Look at the numbers Perfidious Patrick. Obama did put forth another jobs bill too. Don’t remember the details? It included actual job creation initiatives, unlike the wishful thinking, hopeful method by making-a-more-friendly-business-climate model Conservatives revert to: the model where you just give it up to God or give it up to the private sector and pray that one or the other will come through. Obama’s plan also had deficit reduction in it, tax incentives, and a number of other things. But, again, the Do-Nothing Conservative Congress blocked its passage.

      Maybe if Scott Walker had spent time on actual job creation initiatives rather than gallivanting across the country raising record-breaking amounts of campaign cash from out of state interests to fund his propaganda Ads, maybe just maybe, we’d have more job creation. So no, Patrick you can thank Scott Walker for Wisconsin’s economic woes. Look at the data for states with Republican governors implementing Conservative “economic” policies. They are all faring worse than Democratic states. I’ll grant you this, though, Obama has implemented and articulated Conservative economic policy, not Progressive policy. So, you do have somewhat of a point be it ever so lean. But if you’re going to knock him for health care reform and for “basic economic principles” then knock a little harder – cause all those things you’re knocking – yeah – those are all Conservative principles. The Conservative Propaganda Machine is backing off from them now to ensure Obama’s single term, but they’ll be right back on ‘em later when it is time for the Do-Nothing Congress to do Do-Something – when they will take credit for it. An ugly game your Team Extremist is playing, Patrick. Ugly and immoral Conservative Radicalism.

      But be serious, Patrick. The GOP economic plan is never about active job creation. It’s about job Voo Doo, as George W. once described it. As you rightly point out it’s about creating a business “climate” in the private sector. Not job “creation.” And that “climate” is generally pretty limited and unsustainable in terms of breadth or scope. That’s Limited Government. Lots of Limits. And I point out again, Scott Walker has put his economic plan in place. Scott Walker has created the climate that he said he would do. Check it out for yourself. Scott Walker is touting the success of the “structural reforms” in Act 10. Really, do check it out. The website of the “Office of the Governor” has a whole new look, and no kidding you know what it looks like? Really, it looks like Fox News graphics. That should tell you something, eh? Of course, there’s a Fox News clip right on the front page too. That should tell you something, eh? Well, I’ll spare you the analysis. Scott Walker is pitiful and perfidious. Not a statesman by any stretch of the imagination. Say! Pitiful and perfidious! Perfidious Patrick you must be related. Just what’s your connection with the Office of the Governor? Or can’t you say?

      1. Right on, sofa! Your country needs taxes! Advocate for Republican President Eisenhower’s taxation levels!

  2. Looking for gov’t to create jobs?
    Silly lefties- That’s like looking to prostitutes for nuclear physics.
    Gov’t can only tax. And “Taxation is the power to destroy.” -Daniel Webster arguing before SCOTUS

    How about starting/growing businesses or farms yourselves? That’s where jobs come from.

    1. Scott Walker promised in 2010 that he’d create 250,000 jobs by the end of his first term in office. If government doesn’t create jobs – as you’re asserting – then what business does Gov. Walker have making such a promise?

      1. Walker is a con man, as is anyone (potus) in govt who claims they can create jobs.
        Govt can destroy through regulation and taxation.
        Two wings of the same party, working to build the police state and steal from/enslave individuals.

        Individuals create jobs to improve their position in life through their own hard work.

    2. sofa,

      Bless you. You love FDR! In your mind, he’s a “righty.”

      I took your comment to PJ from a previous thread.

      “-PJ Facists like Mussolini and Adolf were National Socialists. Lefties.
      They were to the right of Marx, but Lefties who preached “to each according to his needs”.
      Adolf nationalized Health Care, pushed gun control, and put Car companies under national control. Sounds familiar, eh?
      Typical Lefty agendas.
      Stalin and Mao and Pol Pot: Lefties.
      Point being- Marxism,Facism,Socialism=Lefty Dictatorships, as they have to be, to redistribute wealth using force. Lefti-ism always resorts to force against the people. Always.

      Thanks for citing so many examples of your confusion. Lots of misinformation without understanding=Miseducated.
      Ever been to China, North Korea, Eastern Europe under the Soviets, Cuba? They provide data which counters your mythology: Examples of use of force to make people follow flawed lefty ideologies. They also all have national health care, gun control, etc.”

      FDR is the guy who beat Hitler. GOP was against going into World War II. They favored Hitler against Stalin.

      Can you call Sykes and explain this to him. I’m interested to learn Charlie’s reaction.

      1. FDR was a huge fan of Stalin. It’s History.
        FDR emulated many of Adolf’s programs here in the US. It’s History.
        FDR, Adolf, Stalin– All for big govt and weak individuals.
        Wilson and FDR created many of the Marxist programs that burden us today. Freakin’ commies.

        War is about banking, not idealogy.

        And the left.right definitions and GOP.Dem stuff is ridiculous. Both parties destroy individual life,liberty,property. Two wings of the same party. You need to look past the marketing, and look at what they are really doing.

          1. <>

            ## 1928 Democrat Presidential Nominee Alfred E. Smith, and the 1924 Democrat Presidential Nominee John Davis all called the New Deal communistic.

            ## FDR supporter Merle Thorpe wrote in 1935, “We have given legislative status, either in whole or in part, to eight of the ten points of the Communist Manifesto of 1848; and, as some point out, done (sic) a better job of implementation than Russia.” Colonel Sactuary’s pamphlet Is the New Deal Communist? made a 35 point comparison of it to Marx’s 1848 program.

            ## Winston Churchill said in 1937: “The Washington administration has waged so ruthless a war on private enterprise that the US…is actually…leading the world back into the trough of depression.”

            ## FDR ruled by decrees and rules and regulations of its own making; between 1933 and 1943 FDR issued 3,556 Executive orders.
            FDR built a cult of personality just as Hitler and Stalin did – it is necessary in a tyranny because in rule by men, loyalty is not to law or country but to a person. Power then depends on such a cult.

            ## Here are the 10 planks of the Communist Manifesto which should be engraved on every statue of FDR, every school named after him, and every book about FDR:

            1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes. (FERA acquired 25 million dollars of land by mid-1935; the Resettlement Administration later bought many millions of Acres; FDR called for national land redistribution in his 1st inaugural)

            2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax. (“…the duty rests upon the government to restrict such incomes by very high taxes.” FDR, PPA 1935:274; 1935 Wealth Tax Act; FDR imposed a 90 percent rate on corporations and issued a decree that no one could make more than $25,000 after taxes – overridden by Congress.)

            3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance. (1935 Wealth Tax Act with its confiscatory inheritance taxes)

            4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels. (cf. 117,000 Americans of Japanese descent 1941 which the ACLU calls “the worst single wholesale violation of civil rights of American citizens in our history.” FDR wanted to put ethnic Germans in concentration camps too, but there were too many.)

            5. Centralization of credit in the banks of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly. (Banking Act of 1935, gold confiscation by Proclamation 2039 in March 1933 and formalized in the 1934 Gold Reserve Act, etc.)

            6. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state. (Federal Communications Act of 1934, Railroad Coordination Act, ICC, FTC; FDR put private air mail carriers out of business and had the Army deliver mail in ’34)

            7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan. (TVA (FDR proposed 7 other TVA-like projects), Rural Electrification; the NRA was business and industrial planning; on 8/14/41 the House rejected FDR’s Property Seizure Bill passed by the Senate which would have given him dictatorial power over all business and industry as well as confiscated all private arms; Resettlement Administration)

            8. Equal obligation of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture. (CCC, CWA, PWA, WPA, etc)

            9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country. (Subsistence Homestead Division, Rural Rehabilitation Division of FERA, and the Resettlement Administration)

            10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc. (NRA)

    -TJ and his pals

  4. Look what both parties have done together recently: The Tories have

    “…created and housed an army of mercenaries in our midst;

    For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States;

    They have erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

    For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent;

    For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury;

    For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments;

    In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

    But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”

    Sic Semper Tyrannis
    Always.

  5. You discredit yourself when you say “gov can’t create jobs”. Military spending creates millions of jobs – from the army grunt, to the Boeing line worker and Lockheed engineer. Now if you want to argue that they aren’t efficient jobs – that it takes a ton of money to create and/or sustain them – fine. But they are real jobs. Teachers, fireman, police, local politicans, the Supreme Court justices…. should I go on and on and on???? My point – the moment you say “gov can’t create jobs” you have proven you are an ill informed idealogue.

    Now let’s go to an extreme example to help you understand demand-side econ and how Gov ‘spending’ DOES create jobs: Food stamps and welfare checks don’t make the poor rich – they are still poor. So where do those billions go???? Answer – it gets IMMEDIATELY passed through their hands into the hands of businesses and workers. The farmer, the truck driver and the grocer all earn money off the gov’s teet – those are real jobs. Conversely if you won’t feed the poor they cost billions in health care, police and emergency services, not to mention the blight on our communities as tent cities and bread lines crop up and every corner has a pan handler.

    Finally – when a rich person gets richer – they put it in savings. Savings does NOTHING for the economy. Money that gets spent is an award waiting for a hard worker on the other end – even when it is a down and out person in the middle. And this explains why an economy with record inequality is far less productive then one where everyone has a chance – and some money to spend.

    If you want to know why $1trillion deficits haven’t led to more jobs – it is because private debt is on the decline and being paid back. About $800B per year for the last 3 years has gone to pay down private sector loans. The Gov’s debt is high so that the private sector can get out of debt sooner. And I hate to break another shocker – not just to the blind idealogues, but most people – the US Gov NEVER has to be paid back. We do not need to raise taxes to help the US GOv get out of debt. It can service that debt forever – just like we have for over 200 years.
