WI veterans encounter difficulties obtaining new state licenses

Yet another example of incompetence on the part of Scott Walker’s administration.

Some Wisconsin veterans trying to get their hands on special new driver’s licenses have been confused by a state website and unable to reach the toll-free hotline for assistance.

The state veterans affairs and transportation departments announced the new licenses on Veterans Day. Valid starting Monday, they give military veterans access to discounts and other perks.

A number of county veterans services officers see problems with the rollout of the licenses, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Friday ( http://gbpg.net/IjkBe9). To qualify, veterans have to obtain written certification of their military status from the state Department of Veterans Affairs. They were urged to enroll at the website, http://wisvets.com , or by calling the toll-free number.

Kathy Marschman, assistant deputy secretary of veterans affairs, said an unclear certification process on the website has been fixed but acknowledged the state’s call center was overwhelmed and at times unreachable. She said calls have been coming in at a rate of 300 a day, many more than expected.

This just goes to show that while Republicans like Scott Walker and his legislative allies are good at winning elections, they’re terrible at actually governing.
