Boycotts and Brats : The Sequel

I posted a few days ago about how the World\'s Largest Bratfest had become somewhat of a political football. While many are torn on this issue, including me, there is one person who is not! His name is Ralph Stayer, and he is CEO of Johnsonville brats. Mr. Stayer recently gave $15000 to help fight the recall efforts against Randy Hopper.

So Mr. Stayer, broiled in the middle of controversy, is drawing his line. He is not choosing to remain neutral, and is standing firmly AGAINST the middle class of the great state of WI. The thing about a boycott is everyone has to make up their own minds as to how they best spend their hard earned dollars. Its always best to have ALL of the information handy, when making that decision. As the GAP(red) campaign pointed out:

AS FIRST WORLD CONSUMERS. WE HAVE TREMENDOUS POWER. WHAT WE COLLECTIVELY CHOSE TO BUY. OR NOT TO BUY. CAN CHANGE THE COURSE OF LIFE AND HISTORY ON THIS PLANET.

A couple other items:

* Madison Mayor Paul Soglin was on this issue a couple of years ago.

* Jessica King is a great alternative to Randy Hopper, let’s support her!

  1. I just can’t fathom why any self-respecting Bratophile would actually buy Johnsonville or any other factory sausage. Yes, I include Usinger’s and Klement’s as factory sausage. Do yourselves a favor and go to an actual sausage shop or grocery store that actually makes their own brats, etc. Try European Sausage on Muskego Avenue, Rupena’s on South 76th, etc.

For me, boycotting Johnsonville isn’t going to be difficult!!!!!

  2. So you say by him giving it to fight the recall is against middle class families? I say it supports the tax paying middle class families, remember this is about union membership paying their fair share which they say 12% will send them into the poorhouse. I looked up correctional guard salaries as these men and women have a very tough job and deserve every penny they get. However he are the top 15 listed and this does not include their benefits, do they really think middle class people believe they cannot afford to pay their fair share?

    1. Notalib…what is your original source? I’d like to see the entire spectrum.

  3. I don’t know why anyone would want to buy a johnsonville sausage that is packed in walker/koch/johnsnon butts – they buy steaks with their multi-hundred-thousand tax breaks.

DON’T BUY JOHNSONVILLE SAUSAGES AND CALL THEM AND TELL THEM WHY

  4. Looks like CEO Stayer made up his mind for us: Boycott Johnsonville- even the free ones at the fest. Or provide free transportation to the event from homeless and Hot Meals and Community Food Banks across the state. Have Johnsonville serve the needy as their actions swell the ranks. Brat Fest goers don’t have to be future paying customers.

  5. thank you…….apparently thank you alone is too short for a post…go figure!

  6. You know, brats were originally stuffed in animal casing – intestines.

It appears that johnsonville has decided to leave the feces in the casing and want you and me to buy them, eat them, and proclaim that johnsonville’s mouldy-crap filled intestines are “good eats”!

But if you eat johnsonville products, you are literally eating wingnut crap!

  7. “AS FIRST WORLD CONSUMERS. WE HAVE TREMENDOUS POWER. WHAT WE COLLECTIVELY CHOSE TO BUY. OR NOT TO BUY. CAN CHANGE THE COURSE OF LIFE AND HISTORY ON THIS PLANET.”

The problem with this is that I cannot counter-boycott and choose to not buy public union “product.” If I try to starve the beast like you guys are trying to do, I get arrested and/or fined because I didn’t pay my taxes. So while you side has the freedom to boycott businesses that don’t agree with your viewpoint, my side is forced through law to pay regardless if I agree with public union tactics or not.

  8. Boycott away squid…what do you want to boycott? your streets plowed? your sewer? The local police department? the local fire department? your local hospital?

    1. Yes, because those are my only options. I want to stick it to public unions, so that means I don’t want police protection. Geezus.

First of all, I would still get these services regardless of public unions and their ability to collectively bargain.

But since you asked, if I could pick and choose where my tax dollars went(like you can pick and choose what brats you eat) it wouldn’t be to public union dues, at least until Walker’s bill gets officially passed and it’s voluntary. This really would be enough for me as a counter-boycott.

But alas, I cannot. Because like I said, I am coerced through law to support public unions. So enjoy your freedom of boycotting Johnsonville and any other business that you disagree with, meanwhile I will obey the law and pay taxes.

      1. Squid despite the fact that my taxdollars go to such things as say the iraq war, afghanistan war, subsidizing GE to the tune of 3 Billion dollars and also things like The Govs numerous big SUV’s or flying him to Florida to do interviews with the loony far right Newsmax or paying for rebeccaforreal to go to fundraisers with Karl Rove. I will also obey the law and pay MY taxes.

        1. Congratulations. You’ve managed to completely whiff on my point and add a bunch of unrelated items. You’re taking obtuseness to a new level.

Johnsonville is pro-Walker, you boycott. Public unions are pro-democrat, tough shit.

          The end.

          1. Not at all Squid….just pointing out your not the only one who cant pick and choose in a democracy. As a matter of fact unions are democracy in the workplace.

Also Before February 2011, public unions weren’t so pro-democrat.

            1. “lso Before February 2011, public unions weren’t so pro-democrat.”

Just so I understand are you saying unions were not major supporters of the democrats before that date or are you saying unions were not democratic before that date? I just want to understand

  9. Have you heard the latest for the boycott people, the unions are now using stickers and placing them on certain items in stores that they want people to boycott, this has started because Massachusetts, a strong democrat state has ended collective bargaining also. The nice thing about the sticker idea it really helps all of us who support the companies to know which ones you are targeting so we know what to buy in quantities. SO I guess the old look for the union label now has a whole new meaning, thanks guys!

  10. Now, I am a bit connected to liberal groups and liberal politicians. So you’d think I’d hear something about these ‘sticker shock’ campaigns from somewhere on the left. But so far the only place that’s warned about them is the news media via the Wisconsin Grocery Association. Is this all it’s ‘trumped’ up to be?

  11. Taxes being the price we pay for a civilized society make this more a question of where our tax dollars go. I would much prefer my tax dollars go to the Police, Fire, EMT and First Responders who show up during and after disasters doing things most of couldn’t or wouldn’t do. Or to Teachers who have to patch together a school day for incerdibly diverse students from every socioeconomic background all at once with ever dwindling resources. Or to childrens health care for families who can’t afford it. But I can’t abide giving my tax dollars to Corporations who do not deserve it. Corporations should not be subsidized!! If the “free market” they always espouse is so wonderful then they need to operate under it, period. If their business model and accumen are so market worthy they will succede if not, they fail. That is the free market but these cowards won’t do it. I was a small business owner and if you can’t afford to fail don’t take the risk. Quit begging for corporate welfare.
